Male singers:
1a. Waylon Jennings
1b. George Jones
then the field.
Hank, Sr., Conway Twitty, Merle Haggard and Johnny Cash probably vying for that third spot and, if pushed, I probably give it to Twitty.

My top 5 are my favorites, not necessarily the top five of all time:
In no particular order:
--George Jones--didn't appreciate him til I got a bit older--great songs.
--Any Lyle Lovett fans out there? Cool voice and variety of styles--can do country, blues, rock, gospel, whatever. Then there's the marriage to Julia Roberts.
--Dwight Yoakam--best rocker in Country, IMO
--Willie Nelson--from "Crazy" til today, a classic.
--Johnny Cash. 'nuff said. Not the greatest singer, but his IS the man in black.

Probably in my third tier, but not up there with the legends.

Willie Nelson
Just too nasally to be considered a great singer. Now, he is a legend and one of the GOAT songwriters, but purely on singing - not up there with the George Joneses, Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggards and Johnny Cashes of the world.

The thread is your top 5, not the top 5. It’s very objective, Willie Nelson may not be technically good at singing, but who’s to say that? I don’t think Gram Parsons is the best technical singer, but his style combined with his lyrics works like magic. If I am trying to pick the best singer in country music history, what defines that? Having a good twang in your voice? Tough to say.

I get that, but we can't converse about it? I'm not saying his list was wrong, but more why I didn't include Willie Nelson in my list - after all he makes the list of legendary country singers despite his shortcomings in vocal ability. So, that ought to count for something.
Sort of like Dylan, who gets knocked for the nasally sound, no one questions his songwriting or influence. However, he is probably underrated as a singer. He showed remarkable range at times, just take something like Lay Lady Lay - which casual rock/pop fans might not even recognize as Dylan.
Willie is probably in that category to a degree.

Hey, no problem. You can dissect my list all you want. It's all conversation. After creating it I realized I fell into the trap molded by the OP--it was all male country singers.
I'd now have to add Patsy Cline and Loretta Lynn on there.

Fair enough. MY Top 5 (and, frankly, most folks' Top 5s) certainly doesn't include Lyle Lovett or Dwight Yoakum. More controversially, I suspect, is that I also wouldn't consider Willie Nelson Top 5, either.
Not when that would mean bumping George Jones, Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Conway Twitty or Hank Williams, Sr., for example.
Is that better?

Yeah, I don't get the Lyle part, but I would easily put Dwight ahead of some of your list. Conway? Eeeuw. Can't stand Willie, but I would never tell someone what tier he belongs in.

Yeah, I don't get the Lyle part,
Well, as the OP said, it's MY favorites list, not a top 5 all time greats. I just like his uniqueness and variety of styles over the years.
