Rush, Tesla and Def Leppard was awesome back in the day. Sounded way better live then they did on their albums which shocked the absolute living hell out of me considering how much studio work they put in on their albums to give them that polished sound.

Rush is phenomenal live. Better than studio because they sound mostly like the studio but they always add something more.
I recorded large parts of a couple of their shows from recent years, and they came out pretty good (decent sound):
Here's a great example of what they do live—they interject humorous bits at the beginning and near the end:
La Villa Strangiato at Concord Pavilion (2011)
More Rush humor:
Tom Sawyer at Shoreline (2010)

Better than album:
Cross Canadian Ragweed (RIP)
Foo Fighters
Muse (They probably belong in their own category)
Oasis
Tool
Skynyrd
Not quite as good:
Metallica
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Dog shite:
Incubus (It may have just been an off night)

Aerosmith
Confederate Railroad
Randy Travis
Skynyrd (90's version)
Who doesn't?
Bush
AC/DC- Brian Johnson sounded old and out of breath.
One of the best concerts I went to was Bad Company and Ted Nugent. Both of them killed it. I think the only original member of Bad Company was the drummer and he kind of emceed the show. I didn't know they had that many hits.

Rush - their live performances are nearly an exact replication of their studio productions, with better improvisations.
I was going to post about Rush but you beat me to it.
Also (as others have said) The Who. Their live performances are often better than the studio recordings. The Live at Leeds performance of Tommy is amazing.

No doubt about it.
Mediocre studio cuts get the "treatment" and morph into awesome jams.

I was amazed at how good RHCP sounded live bc I wasn't expecting the singing to sound as good.
