Got in a minor argument with my brother in law. He's a modest guitarist. We were talking about some of the best bands you'd only listen to forever (if you were trapped on a deserted island). Of course, I dropped Steely Dan. He was surprised, but certainly not offended. He did say some of their music was "elevator music-ish". I disagreed. Of course, he dropped that he know more about music than I do (yet he doesn't know who Bill Evans, Michael Hedges, etc. is). Nonetheless...what do you think:

Led Zepplin
The Beatles
The Doors
Pink Floyd

Zep would be the better musicians

Beatles would have the better lyrics and vocals

The doors kinda suck

I think Steely Dan are better studio musicians than any of them. Gaucho was perfection

Most who fail to see the genius of the Dan know little zero about music. When I say "music" I mean the performing/writing part of music.

A lot of that stuff is very difficult to pull off live.

Of those listed, Steely Dan definitely has the most detailed, intricate, complex compositions. That doesn't mean those other bands aren't great though.

I'll accept that criticism but the reason I'm not a big Steely Dan fan has nothing to do with talent or proficiency. I'm just not into the music.

I love SD, but some of their music is certainly "elevatorish.". I don't need all music to punch me in the balls, though. Hell, I was playing Jazzkamikaze at my house one night and a friend insisted I change it. After bitching at him, he divulged that it was the hold music for one of their vendors. I changed it.

People that don't "get" Steely Dan are Philistines

Plain and simple

Nope. They just aren't my thing. I love Jazz. Have an extensive Jazz collection but that style of Jazz is not something I get into just as I prefer Miles's bop period to his fusion jazz.

the doors do not belong on that list
you could argue neither does Led Zeppelin but others will disagree

the rest is personal preference although if your criteria is variety of excellence then the Beatles is your answer

The Beatles were so much more important than people nowadays realize. Every single was an event. They were frontline for almost a decade.

Why would people not realize it when it gets mentioned ad nauseum on music boards all over the interwebz.

I think that people who want to argue for the Beatles realize -- though they won't admit it -- that their catalog doesn't stand up. Their music has not aged nearly as well as several of their contemporaries. And so they try to make up for this deficiency by seeing how many times they can use the words "influential", "important", or the like. It makes me queasy.

Bottom line: if their songs aren't ever -- and have never been -- included in my regular rotations, then in my book they just aren't that good. I don't care if they focking invented the focking b flat. If the music doesn't hold up, the analysis is over.

I have no idea what "detailed music" means, but of those four bands, LZ both the best and most musically diverse catalogue, and I honestly don't believe it's a particularly close call.

I can't necessarily disagree with this, and I actually like the doors, and even went through a doors phase.* But they've gotten worse and worse to me over time. Their catalogue is kinda limited, and what they were doing musically was really limited. JM had a great voice, though.

*To be fair, I also went through a jimmy buffett phase.
