I like a lot of the answers so far, but for me I think its an easy answer for two of the most promising careers cut short, Hendrix and Ritchie valens

Freddie Mercury was 45 I think. Still had a lot left to accomplish imo. Probably not as much as some of the others but worthy of mention.

And I might have missed it as I skimmed through this pretty fast but Jim Morrison is also worth mentioning.

Wow you were the first person to mention Morrison, nice.

Syd Barrett. Even though he technically didn't die. Had he not gone crazy, im sure his crazy diamond would still be shinning.

I think this point can get a justified Nirvana comparison. At 27 both Morrison and Cobain were train wrecks of human beings. They would have gone downhill fast IMO. Same age. Heroin. Both may have said all they had to say creatively.

Surprised Bob Marley hasn't come up.
I was gonna say this as I was cruising through the thread...I agree with many that have been mentioned, but Bob wasn't slowing down anytime soon had he not gotten sick...and his impact was not just musical...he was impacting politics and ideals...hell, he still does for those that are willing to listen...
Duane Allman for sure tho...

I'm not sure about Cobain, but I think if Morrison had straightened up he wouldve had a very long successful career.
