As far as musicianship in those two departments, cannibal corpse blows them away. Africa is probably their best known song and I do like the band, I'd just put them on the same level as a band like Chicago.
Chicago is bad arse. They deserve mention amongst the very best.
I'm not referring to Toto's popular songs necessarily. I'm talking about their body of work and that music and the more technical aspects of it as a band, not as a lone musician or lead singer in tights and tail.

van halen's debut was a game-changer, and i have no shame admitting i enjoy all the DLR-era albums (hagar, that's another story). that said, those albums came at a heavy price, being that many of us were subjected to waves of wannabe copycat guitarists....

I can dig Van Halen, but Guns n Roses is the best US band of that era/genre

I would say they don't rank amongst the greatest "bands". Possibly you could rank them with the greatest "acts". Roth is nothing more than a showman and Eddie's guitar playing was the main attraction, not really the songs. To top it off, Alex is one of the worst drummers of that era.

Musically, I'd place them well under the likes of bands like Rush, Yes, Pink Floyd, Yard Birds, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, The Stones, Sabbath, Toto, Eagles, Allman Brothers, CCR, etc
Youve got to be kidding me? Those guys can barely play their instruments.

Yes they are.

Your boy Trey has got to be the least "rockstar looking" rockstar in the history of rockstars.

The original lineup of Van Halen is one of the top rock 'n roll bands ever, period. Definitely in my personal top ten.

To me, Van Halen should change their name to Jock Jams. Every other song played in a sports arena is by Van Halen. It's annoying and trite.

Laugh as you may, but The Stones made their bacon on charisma, attitude and not giving a frick. Musicianship was always lacking with that band.

Do you even Mick Taylor, bro?

They were incredibly influential as well.

Brian Jones was a pretty good multi-instrumentalist too before the drugs took his talent and his soul.
