The only current country artist that I buy CD's of is Strait. Since he has been writing with his son and Dean Dillon, his albums, sorry, CD's, have had a more Texas music feel.

Although his new one "Love is Everything," does not have as many cuts written by him, his son and Dillon, the third track "Blue Melodies" is, IMO, one of the best Country songs in the last 25 years.

Other than Strait, I like the Texas sound. Pat Green, Lyle Lovit, Asleep at the Wheel etc. Nothing like hanging out in Central Texas, (Gruene Hall) and enjoying some Texas country.

Garth is to country as Nirvana was to rock. He was a great innovator whose music was absolutely terrific, but never should have formed the base upon which the rest of the genre would be built from that point on.

The only difference is that I actually like Garth Brooks a lot more. Nirvana was just meh, but it birthed Foo Fighters

Hate to break it to y'all, but Nashville didn't "ruin" country music. Lotta good burgers in this town; nobody forcing you to eat McDonald's. -Jason Isbell

Gonna have to disagree with Isbell here. There are no radio stations in my town that play decent country music. They all play the SAME THING: Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, Keith Urban, Rascal Flatts, Miranda Lambert

If I want to listen to good country, I have to spend money on an ipod and itunes to do so or go buy CDs(which Im not opposed to doing but still). There is literally nothing tolerable on the radio any more. I listen to a variety station that will play some 80s, 90s alternative and 90s R&B or talk radio

There is no radio station in my area that plays good (or even decent) new country. I used to listen to the local new country station, but over the last few years it has gotten unlistenable. They have stopped even playing high-charting George Strait songs in the last few years. In my area there is a classic country station that plays country music from the 50s through the mid-90s, so I usually just listen to that when I'm in my truck.

I envy you. I have to just turn off my radio some times. Silence is better to me than crap country

The only thing wrong with Garth is that he paved the road for today's trash. I enjoy his music for the most part but at the end of the day he stole the soul from the genre

He is pretty much the Steven Spielberg of music.

country music has always had plenty of suck in it. Kenny Rogers I'm looking at you.

ETA: You just thiknk country used to be good because you only hear the good old stuff. Here's the top Country songs from 1978:

You Don't Bring me Flowers, Barb & Neil
Hopelessly Devoted to you ONJ
A little more love ONJ
you Needed Me Anne Murray
Talking in your sleep Crystal Gayle.

You get the idea. This was well before Garth.

Yikes!

Country hasn't lost it's feel. Radio country never had a great feel to begin with as a whole.

I like the Shania answer. Country music used to be catered to older white males. Songs had depth, feeling, and meaning.
Country music today is catered to young to middle age
white females

As much as I hate what Shania did to country music I sure did enjoy her videos as a teenager. I second the Spotify option. I've plugged in the names I've heard on here and have developed a heck of a playlist of country I did not know existed.

Garth drew listeners to country radio, but that was the only place you heard his music. Shania's music got picked up by Top 40. Everyone after realized the paper to be made hence the move to have "crossover appeal."
I'll defend my current hometown and Isbell. Nashville didn't kill country. LA did. And if it wasn't dead before, that thing I heard the other night call Florida Georgia Line damn sure put a pillow over the face and ended it for good.
