Garth

He neutered country and repackaged it for the masses. He was basically the male version of Taylor Swift in the ‘90’s- self-aggrandizing, self-centered and a syrupy sweet contrived image. He was not bro country but he kicked the door open for shitty acts like Ricochet and Diamond Rio which opened the door for GA-fig Line and Dierks Bentley, etc.

When I think of country I think of like George Strait.

I love that when bro country songs about trucks were at their peak George Strait put out a banger about his car.

this is such a lazy take, mainly becuase it's completely wrong

DTD- you even go on to specify in your post:

quote:

He was not bro country

Which was literally the topic of the thread.

Garth isn't bro country, at all. Not even close. The fact that he was less waylon/merle/conway/etc country and more palatable to a wider audience doens't make him "bro", nor is that even an insult. It's simply a different form of the same genre.

Look at the megahits that really propelled him to populatiry. Much too young, not counting you, the dance, friends in low places, two of a kind, rodeo, shameless, papa loved mama, callin baton rouge, etc. I mean those are all very much traditional "country" songs any way you slice it. To compare all of those songs above to the modern bro country where peopel don't play instruemnts, there's no fiddle or violin, there's heavy rap basslins and backing beats, etc. is frankly an insult.

I'm not even a garth fanboy, I'd say I appreciate his music a "standard" amount just as much as any random sampling of people you may ask. But he is LIGHT YEARS better than the shite being played nowadays. Not even in the same universe.

We have a poker tournament most weekends either at my house or a friend’s. Last Friday it was at the friend’s, and someone put on some music that was essentially their playlist. After over an hour of straight bro country, a Korn song came on. I said loud enough for both tables to hear, “Hey, there is at least one actual song in this playlist.”
I'm sure everyone was glad Dad was there.

Why is almost all “country” music these days just shitty pop music sung in a terrible fake southern accent?

Uhh bullshite. Just because that’s what you hear when you turn on YOUR radio to XM the highway or whatever doesn’t mean that is “almost all country”.

Tons of amazing music coming out. You just have to know where to find it. The Texas and Americana music scene is top tier as it’s always been. Jason Isbell and Turnpike are crushing it. Also as far as mainstream you’ve got Zach Bryan who is totally killing it and is an authentic artist. Chris Stapleton is still around and Luke Combs isn’t bad for Nashville guys.

Don’t be that lazy take “country music sucks now” guy. It’s out there just as good as it’s ever been.
