When it became "Country Pop". I turned on the local country station while in my truck the other day and I was hearing "Country Rap". This redneck was actually rapping and it sounded like shite. Turned that crap off and went back to WTIX FM.

Truth is, country has taken the side road a few times in its duration. Guys like Chet Atkins, when producing records, was looking for a smoother, less twangy sound and using music more like an orchestra instead of the typical country string bands----the so-called "Nashville Sound".

But there's always been singers that wanted it the old way and they had to fight to get their music produced. Singers like Clint Black, Randy Travis, Travis Tritt, Roseanne Cash, etc. who wanted to stick more to the roots of country music.

If I listen to country music now, I mostly listen to my collection of it on CD's, cassettes or vinyl-----and I prefer the old school stuff:

George Jones
Merle Haggard
Johnny Cash
Tammy Wynette
Loretta Lynn
Willie Nelson
John Anderson
Faron Young
Lynn Anderson
Clint Black
George Strait
Patsy Cline
Charlie Pride

Just to name a few of my favorites.

I don’t know when it started, but Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus put the final nail in the coffin with Old Town Road.

It’s bad when a satire character like Wheeler Walker Jr makes better country music than any on the radio today

all of Bingham is on Spotify.

Not all. I used to have a copy of his “first” album. I don’t know if it was a demo or bootleg, or just a really small label release, but I haven’t been able to find it anywhere. The hard drive I had it in crashed and I wasn’t able to recover it. I think it was called Wishbone Saloon.

Go to YouTube and search his name and Boys Town. That and a slightly different version of Southside of Heaven are the only two songs I remember on it.

How so? You guys always say this and no one has ever explained how.

If you cannot tell that Garth is a contrived, syrupy, self-aggrandizing, phony poser then there is nothing to explain. Same for Toby Queef.

When male singers traded in cowboy hats for baseball caps.

Rascal Flatts/Lone Star. It started ticking back up after Eric Church's second album and definitely with Chris Stapleton.

Now we have morgan wallen who is actually not bad. Commercial enough, but not gay whimpy whiny music or wanna be pop. And THEN there's Hardy, who plays rock music in the country genre. Lyrics are par for the course, but something about him feels more genuine. Maybe it's that he writes his own stuff.

TL;DR country is much better today, at least with a handful of artists, than from about 2000-2017. PS: Tyler Childers is boss.

Yeah, she hit the scene around 91 or 92 so she’s been doing it for 30 years. Pretty significant career. She hasn’t released an album in 6 years though, and seems to have transitioned to Christmas concerts and Food Network shows. Good for her. I’ve always been very attracted to her, but never much cared for much of her music. She does have some pipes though.

I mean I know what happened to those particular women singers my point was why there weren’t any new ones with similar style and vocal talent

I think there are ones with similar talent. I just don’t think there’s a market for them. A lot of the ones I’ve seen buzz about are the singer/songwriter type, and those 90’s female artists didn’t really fit that mold so the style comment is applicable. Mary Chapin Caroenter is the only one I can think of off hand from the 99’s that fit that. Maybe Suzy Boggus, but I don’t think she wrote any of her songs.
