re: What were your favorite college alternative bands from 1975 to 1985
Dated a girl in the early/mid 80’s who was a huge fan of the “1st Wave” music.
Siouxsie and the Banshees
The Clash
Bryan Ferry / Roxy Music
The Fixx
Thompson Twins
Howard Jones
Berlin

During my adolescent skate board / half-pipe days, I often listened to:
Dead Kennedys
Black Flag
Sex Pistols

Talking Heads, The Smiths, Joy Division, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and The Cure.

Extend it 5 years and My Bloody Valentine would top my list.

Not a big fan of either band, but Bela Lugosi's Dead by Bauhaus and Every Day Is Halloween by Ministry are great songs from that era.

I wish a 15 years old Nolaville had access to these lists of bands. I remember and still listen to many bands everyone has listed, but you had to put some time in looking for some of these acts. Somebody mentioned Mink DeVille, I only discovered them like a year ago and they are awesome.
Anyway, i'll add a few.

Big Country
Madness
Book of Love
The Rave-Ups
English Beat
General Public
Squeeze
Red Rockers
The Knack
Talk Talk
Peter Murphy

I loved REM into the 90s, but their music sounds really dated now.

I couldn't disagree more... One of the few bands that when I put on their early records, it's almost like hearing them for the first time... the sound is so timeless to me..

Murmur, Reckoning and Fables are great albums. Life's and Document are very good.

What year did REM play the Bayou? I graduated high school in 84, so was a little too young to hit the bar scene. I love the early stuff and don’t hate me, but U2 was awesome in the early 80’s
