I'd have to list several to capture the bulk of the 80's.

Political and social commentary

Land of Confusion - Genesis

Sting - Russians

Band Aid - Do they know it's Christmas

USA for Africa - We are the world

Springsteen - Born in the USA

running out of time and have to gomaybe tonight I can do other categories that embodied teh 80's. Greed - like Money for nothing. Pop - like Debbie Gibson. Heavy metal ballads, new wave, emergence of rap, etc..

As far as rock goes, I'd say Here I go Again by white snake.whitesnake. that video has every cheese element possible.

Duran Duran's Rio is pretty definitive of the 80s

to me, "what's he got" by the producers is what i think of when i think of the 80's. they deserved more success....awesome power-pop.

That "rock me tonight" video is credited with killing Billy Squier's career.

I guess I think "Video Killed the Radio Star" by The Buggles... When I think what personifies the whole 80's MTV movement...

As far as just a video, I would guess Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer"

1978 or 79, that was the very first video MTV showed.

Yeah, linked it above. I remember the day MTV started, it was a pretty fascinating time.

Some of the links weren't working on my phone... I know its technically a 70s song, but the sentiment carried on and personified the MTV movement in the 80s

I think it's a pretty defining song for the 80's and the whole video phenomenon. I would put it number one. Couple more in that category

The Vapors - Turning Japanese

Romantics - What I like about You

I was a VJ in a couple of clubs in Baton Rouge in the early 80's. Fun times. No video can touch Thriller for that era. MJ brought in Steven Speilberg for that mini-movie.

JUMP - VH

SLEDGEHAMMER - Peter Gabriel

Thriller may have a bigger playback now but in the 80's I can't remember two videos that played or were more popular than these two. I realize this doesn't answer the question, "which video captures the 80's". I would have to say that would be this one;

Don't You Forget About Me - Simple Minds
