Aja. Or if you like compilations Steely Dan (1978) is insanely good.

PL or maybe Katy Lied. Just dive in a buy a few of their records. Fagan's an awesome lyricist, in my top 5.

Can't Buy a Thrill obviously, next to Aja it's the key to their entire legend.

Don't take any of the above advice. Start with the first one and move through each subsequent release.

It is the only way.

That's how I grew into Steely Dan, take the same approach for Santana as well.

This is good advice. Steely Dan, as I've argued on here before, is less of a "band" and more of a musical concept. The evolution is interesting and it is best heard from the beginning, keeping in mind this was the epitome of album-oriented rock, and Steely Dan was about as experimental as the record label would allow a commercially successful band be.

You could just get this...

The 4 CD box is basically all the albums in order and also includes "FM" from the movie of the same title.

Citizen Steely Dan

Box set that has contains all of their studio albums up to but not including, Two Against Nature. Also contains a live recording of Bodhisattva from 1971, a demo cut of Everyone's Gone to the Movies from 1971, an outtake of Here at the Western World, and the song FM (No Static at All) which was originally on the soundtrack of the movie FM and included in some other compilations.

ETA: Marco beat me to it!!

Agreed. So start with Can't Buy a Thrill which I think is also their best. But the ones that followed were excellent as well.

I'd definitely recommend the individual albums over that set. I never understood the appeal of ignoring album breaks and cramming as much as possible on the individual CDs. Does it even come with the original artwork and liner notes? In addition, read the top Amazon review, where the poster talks about the 1999 remasters, which is what I bought a few years back.

"Aja" is their finest album. No big hits, but nearly an hour of superb jazz-toned rock music.

I just came in here to say that Steely Dan kicks arse and is one of the best bands of the 70s IMO.
