Really. Deacon Blues, albeit, not one of my personal favorites was a huge hit for Steely Dan. Peg and Josie were other huge hits.
My personal favorite from that album is Black Cow.

I think I'd have to agree. So smooth and so funky.

Black Cow, Aja, and Josie are my favorites from that great album. I always found Peg borderline annoying.

Actually, it had 3 moderate sized hits: Deacon Blues, When Josie Gets Home, and Peg. Great songs, but the non-hits on this album were better!

Agree. Songs like "Dr. Wu" on Katy Lied just remind of classic Steely.

That's a great album. But like most of the posters I would have started with Can't Buy a Thrill and then continued on in order. You can't go wrong until you hit Gaucho.

"Deacon Blues" is truly a remarkable work of art. Its melancholy and sense of hopelessness are palpable, and sums up the angst of middle-aged males in its 7 minute narrative. Just listen to the lyrics:
They got a name for the winners in the world,
I want a name when I lose.
They call Alabama the Crimson Tide,
Call me Deacon Blues.
They got a name for the winners in the world,
I want a name when I lose.
They call Alabama the Crimson Tide,
Call me Deacon Blues.

Impressive list of songs, but no Deacon Blues?

Every song on every album is great until you reach Gaucho and run into Glamour Profession and Third World Man. My Rival is just okay. Otherwise the album is solid but compared to other Steely Dan albums it was a step back. Especially following the greatness of Aja. It was the last album before breakup time, sort of like Pink Floyd's The Final Cut following The Wall.

Top the evening off with Brooklyn (Owes the Charmer Under Me) - David Palmer provided the vocals for this song. Different, but a great, low-key diner-esque song.

I scored a Donald Fagan's Morph the Cat cd at a flea market a few months ago, and that is a sick, sick album.
This is my favorite from that album
