What Makes Nirvana Great?

It would appear that I somehow missed out on the Nirvana train growing up.
I know some of their songs as I am sure everyone does but it seems as though many speak of Nirvana so fondly.
What was special about Nirvana? Educate me MB!

kurt cobain killed himself. a cult following began.

eta: I don't mind their music, but they are vastly overrated, IMO.

It wasn't so much how "great" they were, but Nirvana started the grunge movement. While everyone else was copycatting the 80s hair band mess, Nirvana said frick that and was all depressive/patronizing. Plus, they produced Dave Grohl who gave us the Foo Fighters.

They popularized it. The movement was already underway in the NW.

I'd say its all about that "underground" sound that they and many others in the 90s came up with. Everyone was tired of the stupid 80s crappy synth music and wanted something more real.

Yeah, but there were bands doing "grunge" before Nirvana.

Nail on head post. IMHO Cobain was nothing more than another MTV created Vanilla Ice. MTV tried to make Green Day the greatest Punk band ever. I for one am glad Kurt painted his carpet with brain matter.

I thought they were overrated for how 'great' they've been portrayed to be. I think they're good but he's not all that.

There's always going to be shitty music that appeals to massive amounts of people. I don't blame Nirvana for that.

They were the ones that broke through that wall in the early 90's... You knew they had talent when Bleach was released, but no one thought they'd break that big with their next record... They were the exact opposite of Hair Metal.. Too me they were the best out of that Seattle scene (next would be Mudhoney)... which for the most part was alternative sounding metal to me... (Much more interesting things were happening in Chicago, Chapel Hill and the Boston Area)... Also, someone said it earlier, he was a great songwriter with great songs...
Unfortunately, like anything good, that era spawned so many terrible copycat bands to that seattleish sound (Bush, STP)... that it all gets diluted..
