I didn't think that was "hardcore" though. I don't know much about it though

It's not. I thought you meant punk in general.

His dad addresses it every time he comes home from a long day at the plant and after a few budweisers at the local watering hole.

A little too political, fast, and loud for me. I'm not sure I get "punk" music in general

American hardcore is, by its nature, quite political. And fast. And really, I'd only say it last from about 1981-1986. There's some stragglers on the end and some early adopters, but that's pretty much the high water mark of the genre. What to get?

Black Flag - Damaged
Minor Threat - Complete Discography
Minutemen - Double Nickels on the Dime
Husker Du - Land Speed Record
The Germs - GI

ETA - I'm not sure why people are saying the Minutemen aren't hardcore. If anything, they are the MOST hardcore band, particularly in their extreme DIY ethics and fanatical left wing politics. They threw some jazzy stuff in there just because they are awesome. But if you want just straight fury you can get Politics of Time, Buzz or Howl Under the Influence of Heat, or any of the Project:Mersh comps.

Right now Americana is some of my favorite because there tend to be some really good lyricists in that genre.

I love old western music as well. Gunslinger ballads by Marty Robbins comes to mind.

Also American folk music is great.
