I know plenty of guitar players that are technically proficient, but cant write a song to save their lives...
They can ape other's sounds, but lack the creativity to do something on their own...
I'm not really defending Radiohead here, I just hate that argument... it's right up there with he can't sing, so and so has a much better voice...
I understand that and I am not putting musicianship up there as the be all end all. It's just dissapointing that a band can get so huge and the musicians cant really play a lick.
An example - Pink Floyd. Both from similar genres and both HUGE bands. I know alot of people that like Pink Floyd and alot of people that like Radiohead, but hardly anyone that likes both. Generally, the people that like Pink Floyd also like other bands/artists that are known for musicianship like Zeppelin, Gary Moore, Pantera, etc. I dont know a single person that likes Radiohead that appreciates other bands known for musicianship.

I'm on my phone and don't feel like posting links to songs, but this is so wrong.
Listen to "Just" and "Paranoid Android" and say Greenwood can't play a lick. "There There" has a rocking solo as well.

I just listened to Paranoid Android 10 minutes ago and thought it was incredibly subpar and boring. I was specifically listening for musicianship and that was subpar as well. Guitar solo sucked as well. It sounded like someone had been playing guitar for 6 months and decided to go put in 1/2 hr in the studio.

Ok so he's a great composer and he's a multi-instrumentalist. What is he known for in Radiohead? He's known for being the lead guitar player. I know plenty of people from my home town that can play circles around him. If he were to sit down with an electric guitar in one chair and someone that can really play were to sit down beside him and you'd say "ok, entertain me", he would be subpar.

Just listened to "Just", and yea, someone that has been playing for 6 months could compose that, record that, and you wouldnt be able to tell the difference. The clean tone he had on some of the melodies that he harmonized with the vocal hooks leading into the chorus was very good, but that's about the only positive thing I can say about that. His dirty tone was horrible.

Turns out, you're mostly right though.

I like a lot of those too.
The Pink Floyd influence is clearly heard on the spacier parts of OK Computer like "The Tourist" and "Subterrnean Homesick Alien." Kid A in general is what Floyd 2000 would sound like, or at least an idea of it, IMO.
Hell Pink Floyd did some of the first rock electronic experimentation on "On the Run"
Eta: although I do agree Greenwood doesnt match up to Gilmour. Gilmour probably has my favorite tone of all time (next to Hendrix's in "Burning of the Midnight Lamp")

Yea, we can at least agree on all that. Im not trying to ruffle any feathers. Everyone likes what they like. All I meant by this entire ordeal is that I dont understand how they get the love and respect that they do. If Radiohead is someones favorite band, then more power to them. Im sure there are alot of people that dont understand some of the extreme metal I listen to.

The Beatles are my favorite band (by a long shot). There are quite a few tied up at the number 2 spot.
