re: What is it about Radiohead that makes them so polarizing?

I don't want to say I hate them, though I do hate their progeny. Their influence on rock has been horrible. Bands like Animal Collective really are Radiohead's children, and Animal Collective is a stain on pop music. I DO hate them.
And it's mainly because I find that Radiohead, and their progeny, are afraid of glorious noise. Everything is tightly controlled and pre-planned. They are terrified of the spontaneous and the anarachy and danger that the bands I love bring to the table.
Artsy is not an excuse to fail to be able to, well, rock. Modest Mouse is arty and experimental. So is Man Man. So was Captain Beefheart or Television. But those bands could also play glorious noise. They could get you out of your seat and assault your senses.
Radiohead is too tame to get their hands dirty. It's all head, and no heart. And they are pretty awful live. A lot of standing around and trying to hit their marks.
I subscribe to the school of passion over precision. There's no passion in Radiohead's music, and plenty of precision.

I love both bands. And I can understand the argument from both perspectives.

What?
Just because Thom Yorke never spit on stage at the VMA's doesn't mean Radiohead has no passion. Perhaps creativity is their passion? Perhaps making something new, and not trying to be the Beatles or Stones is where their passion lies?
At the end of the day they are different genres, with two entirely different approaches to creating music. I think it's awesome. Both in their respective fields.

I find their music sterile. And that VMA crap is just staged BS. That's not even music, that's just marketing that people lap up and pretend to be shocked. Radiohead is at least a functional band.
Now, they subscribe to an aesthetic I personally dislike. I'm not saying they aren't creative, I'm saying they are afraid of anarchy and noise. Put simply, they do not rock. And I will admit I dislike Radiohead's descendents more than Radiohead. I like a few Radiohead songs, and almost all of the Bends. But they are a band that spends too much time trying to "push boundaries" instead of working on coherent songcraft.
David Lowery pegged OK Computer the best when he called it the modern Tales From Topographic Oceans. Radiohead is like a prog band, and I f'n hate prog. Soulless and sexless.
No one is saying they aren't talented. They are.

As for Radiohead, their music is just kind of strange and completely hookless. I like it, but it takes awhile to get used to.
Creep has an incredible hook. Not sure what you mean.

That's a Hollies song, so it doesn't count.

Do you tend to buy tickets to see bands you don't like?
Didn't think so. Troll better next time.

The Venn diagrams for "groundbreaking music" and "good music" don't always overlap.
Posted on 8/28/13 at 1:32 am to bobbyray21
ETA: I should have put in a few bands/artists in the overlap that were groundbreaking and also sounded good, but I didn't think about doing that until after I finished making the above. And at that point I had already exceeded my daily quota for time spent on a goddamn venn diagram making website.

I find myself different that most Radiohead fans in that, I didn't care much for Pablo or The Bends.
OK Computer on though was simply gold. To me Radiohead is an all time top ten band. They combine many different elements to music that I love all rolled into one.
You can go from a song like Paranoid Andriod which rocks to Sail to the Moon which is majasticly piano driven and gentle to songs like Morning Bell or Dollars and Cents that has a wide range of sounds.
I completely understand the division with them. Older cats might not be into the electriconc fusions with some rock some noise because it doesnt appeal. Thats fine. Same concept for me with country or hip-hop.

Yes, and the band has pretty much disowned that song and all of Pablo Honey. Radiohead is now a different band than the one that made Creep, and has been pretty much since The Bends.

Paranoid Android, Electroneering, 2+2=5, There There, Myxamotosis, Bodysnatchers, Jigsaw Falling Out of Place, and plenty of tracks off The Bends are all fantastic examples of hard rock.
Jonny Greenwood could keep up with any shredding rock guitarist if he wanted to. Phil Selway is also a phenomenal drummer.

I think the polarizing piece is that they come off as art rock and that will always be polarizing... a lot of it is based on a stereotype and people believe it whether its true or not...

I don't think any of those songs are from The Bends

To be fair, I dont think thats what he was saying... he lists those songs and then goes on to add "plenty of songs off The Bends" not listing any by name...
