I have spent the last 10+ year into acoustics but I'm wanting to get into electrics again. I have a Fender mex Strat, that would be alright but I do not like the tremolo bridge at all. I also have a Marshall tube combo amp.
I'm thinking a tele and and some fender reverb amp. I figure this should cover me for most country, rock, blues stuff. Is this the right line of thinking?

American Tele and a Fender Princeton. Will cover every tone you want and takes pedals great.

I love my laney lionheart. It covers country, blues, classic rock and they make a 5 watt version,as well. Fender princeton and deluxe reverbs are nice as well. If its gonna be a combo, I need it to have a 12 inch speaker, but that's just me.

If you don't use the tremolo arm on the Strat consider adding two more tremolo springs in the back, they typically have 3, increasing it to five will render the bridge immoveable, and like a fixed bridge give the guitar much more stable tuning.

I'll echoplex the suggestions above. If you like the strat, "deck" the bridge by installing all five springs and (possibly) tightening the spring claw just enough so that the bridge will remain stationary when you do a two- or three-step bend. Added bonus ... not buying a new tele, while a great versatile suggestion, would give you more $$$ to spend on amp. You can't go wrong with a Fender tube amp. I like the idea of a vintage reissue or vintage modified series Fender paired with an OD/dist box(es) that mirrors your taste. Nowadays, you can get stomps that nicely replicate gain channels from every era of Marshall, Vox, Boogie etc., in every price range under the sun new and used.

If you don't want to mess with tubes and/or are looking for a one-unit grab and go, the new Boss Katana series amps are really impressive and they won't break the bank. I have many formerly tube purist friends abroad who are ditching their high-dollar booteek back breakers and gigging with those now. That alone justifies at least a test-drive before you commit to a particular amp platform.

I love the warm tube tone of my fender hot rod deluxe. My only complaint is that I would like to get a little more crunch out of it on the drive channel, but it sounds fantastic for most styles that aren’t too heavy.

I think I might deck my bridge and see how that goes.

But from my research the last few days. Is there any flaw in thinking I could buy a used squire tele for cheap have some good pick ups put in and be good to go....

I've been playing a '57 Tele thru a '65 super reverb for about 40 years. It pretty much covers the gambit of sounds for most genres.

Squire classic vibe is a great value series of guitars. I have the maghony thinline telecaster. It looks and sounds great. Squires quality is good and they are easy to upgrade.

Friend of mine that passed away had a 57 Tele that he had bought new in 1957. He knew his time was about up, and was friends with Tim McGraw so he sold it to someone Tim knew for a premium price, he said he wanted to make sure his wife didn't sell it at a garage sale for $8.00 after he was gone. Someday I will be in the same position, I have a 1977 Strat I purchased in 1978, but it will never be worth what a 57 Tele is.

I've got an extra tele for sale. It's a made in USA, Highway One, Texas Telecaster; it's not the regular Highway One.
The Texas version is quite desirable among tele enthusiasts and looks like teles from the 50s, with the 5 hole pick guard, vintage tuners and compensated brass saddles. I've upgraded the pickups to duncan quarter pounds. If you're interested, post an email. I don't want to sell this thing online and deal with packing and shipping if I don't have to.

Man, it's all about how much you want to spend, and what tones you are looking for. There are countless options.

If you are looking for a super versatile guitar, look at the Michael Kelly Hybrid Special. Two humbuckers that can be coil tapped, and a piezo in the bridge. Tons of sound options. About $850.

If you want simple, I agree with the Tele and Fender tube amp. Drop a few pedals in front of it and you can get all kinds of tone. I would get at least a Mexican Tele.

If you are just playing at your house, don't get a tube amp with more than 15 watts. I would even consider the VOX MV series (tiny tube-ish amp) or the Orange Micro Dark or Micro Terror. Then grab a 12" speaker cab. The Katana Mini gets a lot of good reviews.

Check out ZZounds. They offer a 4 payment plan with no company credit card. Our up to 12 payments with a credit line.

If money is tight, hit your nearest pawn shop with a wall of guitars and play a bunch. One will speak to you. There are some Ibanez series that are affordable and play real nice. The wizard neck is fast as hell.
