"The Satanist decides of his own life and death and prefers to go out with a smile on his lips when he has reached his peak in life, when he has accomplished everything, and aim to transcend this earthly existence. But it is completely un-satanic to end one's own life because one is sad or miserable. The Satanist dies strong, not by age, disease or depression, and he chooses death before dishonor! Death is the orgasm of life! So live life accordingly, as intense as possible!"

At a solo acoustic Adrian Belew show, I jokingly hollered out a request for Freebird in between songs. Adrian gave me the finger and said, "I got your free bird right here."

In fact, Haggard, 78, is fond of only one contemporary country musician -- Sturgill Simpson. "As far as I'm concerned, he's the only one out there. The rest of them sound like a bunch of (crap) to me. He comes out and does a great show," Haggard says.

The guy that jokes about wanting to hear Freebird? Yes, I'm that guy. And proudly so. We both had a good laugh over it. I thought it was hysterical. Adrian has played with Zappa, Bowie, King Crimson, Talking Heads, Paul Simon, and Nine Inch Nails, among others. No one thought he'd lower himself to cover Freebird. That's the joke. And he was ready for it.

If you ever have a chance to see Adrian in concert, in any format, you should go. I don't know how often he gives solo concerts anymore but they're pretty intimate with a lot of audience interaction.

Man, that had to be a trip. I've never even considered him in an acoustic context.
