You actually spent $1000 on a pair of headphones?

Sennheiser is the best bang for your buck. Around $ 100-200 will get a great sounding pair.

How's the noise-cancelling?

Honestly probably my favorite purchase of 2018.
So easy to connect, battery life, noise cancelling is what it's know for and is amazing, the sound is bose so it's great.

the rankings on wirecutter might help, at least as food for thought, or to help you figure out what questions you should be asking yourself (headphone types, features, price range, etc).
for me, bluetooth is a must. i prefer over-ear models for the best sound & comfort, and some active noise cancelling for planes/trains/automobiles.

I have Sennheisers (wired), and I love them.

Focal makes their speakers and headphones entirely in-house (many speaker manufacturers build the cabinets and crossover networks while outsourcing the actual drivers).
They now produce 4 models (I believe), ranging from around $350 for the Spirit (which I own) up to the Utopia (retail $4000–can be had for less on the street).
HifiMan also is something to consider—heard them at the L.A. Audio Show and they were damn good. They have a wide range of offerings as well.

What’s your budget? Is this just for home or are you going to be traveling with them? Are you also going to be buying an amp and or DAC?
If you are looking for something that sounds fantastic, light enough to travel with, and is efficient enough to be powered (and sound nice) by an iPod, check these out:
Meze Audio
The Meze 99's I linked above is what I use to travel with. I tested about 15 different pairs and it was far and away the best sounding under 1000.
If you are wanting a pair that will be used at home with a nice preamp/DAC and amplifer, I think there are a few you should listen to:
Audeze LCD-3, LCD-X, LCD-4 (these are 4k though)
Focal: Clear and Utopia (4k)
Sennheiser: HD 800S
Mr Speakers: Aeon Flow
HiFiMan: HE-1000, Ether Flow
I went through this journey two years ago and ended up with the Audeze LCD-3 paired with a McIntosh MHA150 amp
Here's a link to a site that allows you to do in home auditions with 2 to 3 pairs of cans at a time. They take a deposit and once you decide what to get, you can apply it towards them. It obviously locks you into buying from them, but it was well worth it in my opinion. Headphone Lending Library
Ethan at The Cable Company were awesome and will also send you amps to use in order to properly power the headphones (if you don't have one).
There is another outfit that does the same thing, but they limit there auditions to 3 days. Headphone Zone
Speakers and headphones is such a personal thing, you are crazy if you don't listen to as many as you can get your hands on to find the right pair for you. Don't worry about reviews, get what sounds best to you. Also, listen to the headphones on what equipment you will be using or at least similar to it. Sure, those Audeze or Focal's sound awesome on this 5k dollar headphone amp and DAC, but may sound like shite on what you have.
Good luck and enjoy!

Had mine for many years and love them. Still working and never had an issue from them. You can purchase new pads for them for dirt cheap off amazon and keep on trucking

I bought the QC 35 II's recently for flying. Best money I ever spent. It's so amazing to be able to just disappear into your own world wherever and whenever you want.
I had a pair of Sennheiser headphone that were a lot cheaper and sounded fantastic, but they didn't have noise canceling and were only useful in a quiet house.

How do you like the LCD-3's? I did the same and ended up with the LCD-X paired with a Schiit tube amp and DAC.
