What American singer would you put on a level with Roy Orbison?

Elvis? Sam Cooke? Sinatra?
Could he go up against European opera singers?
Even if this song isn't your fist choice, listen to what the man does with his voice. A wall of sound just while singing alone.

Sam Cooke who, I believe next to Michael Jackson, is the greatest American singer who ever lived

In all seriousness: Dylan

He is a bit of an Orbison copycat, but he really has a great voice too. I always expected him to catch on more: Chris Isaac.

I concur with Sam Cooke...brilliant...I'd also add Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, and Kenny Rankin...

Sheer vocal range and skill have never really impressed me. Roy Orbison has a handful of songs I like but it's because of the quality of the song, not really because of his voice. I guess if it mattered to me very much I would own a bunch of music by Pavarotti and nothing by Lou Reed instead of the exact opposite.

Roy Orbison is an American treasure and his incredible voice will never be fully appreciated. Great range and power.
I would add Bobby Hatfield to that list. His live performance of Unchained Melody is one of the best live pop vocal performances ever recorded.

Jay Black had in fact been an opera singer:
Jay and The Americans - "Cara Mia"
A technically impressive version: Gene Pitney - "Cara Mia"- Note how he hits the high parts w/o going falsetto
The original version of "Cara Mia"

In my honest and humble opinion, I think Smokey Robinson is one of the GOAT American singers. Hard to compare pop/R&B/soul singers and, for instance, operatic style singers, though.

Yeah, Sam Cooke is up there.
Linda Ronstadt had a beautiful, pure, amazing voice with tremendous range.

Crying - Raul Malo
When You're Only Lonely - Raul Malo
This guy is the closest I ever heard to Orbison. Tremendous voice !
