I’ll start by saying that while I grew up in Texas, I didn’t really grow up with country in my house, and therefore I’m unfamiliar with a lot of old country tunes.

I’m looking to put together a playlist of quiet old country songs like the perfect ”Dreaming My Dreams with You” by Waylon Jennings. or even older records like LINK ]Willie Nelson’s 1962 And Then I Wrote. The backing music on that Willie Nelson album is just perfection.

So any song & album recommendations similar to the above are welcome.

Charlie Rich - Life Has It's Little Ups and Downs

Marty Stuart covered this song on one of his albums which is how I heard of it. Marty did it pretty good, but he didn't come close to Charlie's original. I love the guitar work too.

Ricky Van Shelton’s version is great and was a big hit.

It was written by Leon Payne. He was a blind guitar player/ songwriter from Texas. He wrote Lost Highway and a couple other songs that Hank Williams recorded. He had a few hits by other singers as well. My favorite by him, is the song "It's Nothing To Me", which is written to a guy who gets his arse kicked in a bar by a woman's jealous boyfriend.
