Daughter (no pics) graduates college in May. We always connected through music (she knew the words to American Pie at age 4).

Thinking of getting her a turntable with 10 iconic albums as a grad gift. First question - good idea, or no?

Second, if yes, which albums? Narrowed the list so far to 11...

Maiden - Number of the beast
Sabbath - Paranoid
Petty - Damn the torpedos
Beatles - Abby Road
Led Zep - Iv
Pink Floyd - The wall
U2 - Joshua tree
Eagles - Hotel California
Stones - Sticky fingers
Willie Nelson - greatest hits
Bob Marley - Legend

Maybe Beach Boys - Pet sounds

and/or something Johnny Cash

Personally don't find Petty that far up a top/essential list (IMHO) and you might include a nice card asking for her to pass on something new from time to time to you since we know time is going to get hectic for her (and many the demands for her time). Good Idea.

I gave my daughter about 20 of my albums when she bought her turntable a few years back. I have about 600 and I let her pick what she wanted. Smart girl. Most everything was first album releases.

I would buy her the turntable and maybe a couple albums you feel are essential. But then I would take her shopping for the rest. That would ensure she's getting records she wants and would be a good bonding experience.

I’d swap Metallica album for Maiden, and Neil Young for Eagles...but that’s just me. Solid list, and a very nice gift!

Do I need Hendrix, or is it already pretty heavy 70’s?

Like the idea of Doors. A few Petty songs were her lax teams’ theme songs - hence being on the list.

Narrowing it to a couple and taking her shopping is a very solid idea. What would be the couple?

Just make sure to by a decent record player, not Crosley, so those albums a. Sound good and b. Don't get ruined from a crappy table/stylus. Get her a crappy table/speakers and it's going to turn her off to the vinyl. She go right back to digital.

Just don't cheap out on some Urban Outfitters turntable.

You're gonna want to throw Fleetwood Mac - Rumors onto that list. Back in college, every girl with a record collection had that one.

Does she have a good stero pair of speakers?
Does she have a good subwoofer?
Does she have a receiver or pre/pro and amplifier?
Does she have a phono stage if one is needed?

Without those things the turntable and records don't matter.

If you’re going to include Pink Floyd, it has to be DSOTM. Half of the wall is movie filler.
