I’ve seen them live and listened to countless recordings. So I ask myself, “why can I not get into Phish?” It’s actually quite simple. Anastasio lacks soul and originality. I imagine him as some suburban turd growing up practicing playing with exact technicality, but no heart. He is no artist, he is a replica. Everything I love about music (all genres) has an edge that Trey will never have. Phish sounds like shotty futuristic elevator music. His paint-by-numbers style is everything that I hate about music.

I dont even listened to phish anymore but this is pretty stupid. Please provide examples of guitarists in the “jamband” category that you enjoy.

Sounds like you have only seen 3.0

I'll have a lengthier response later.

IDK, those whale call sounds he makes are pretty original and soulful.

I really enjoyed the group improvisation and cow funk of 97-01, i saw 50 shows in those 4 years. The magic was gone for me after the first hiatus.

Look, it’s just my honest opinion (no troll). I say the same about his voice; zero edge. I mean what would you expect from a spoiled dude from Princeton. I do not believe Phish ever had to go through some of the hardships that true rock bands endure. I’m not saying that affluence can’t make soulful music. I’m just saying Affluent Anastasio can’t.

Maybe I went a little far with the “lack of originality” statement. Crappy music can be original. I mean I’ve never heard an entire song repeat “Gucci Gang” a bunch of times; so that is technically original. I stand by the lack of edge and soul though.

You don't really know shite about Anastasio, clearly. But whatever...

Like someone else said, I don't listen to Phish anymore. Saw them 35+ times from 94-98, but that was it for me. Regardless, it's a silly, unoriginal argument you're making that could be applied to tons of musicians.

I mean, my sentiments toward the band Rush are very similar to what you are positing on Phish, but I'm not saying that the guys are no talent, soulless hacks. They're just not my cup of tea.

Care to cite any examples or discuss which aspect of his playing is "paint-by-numbers". I mean if all you've heard is from '09 and later, sure. You're sort of right (but not totally)

I've learned from being a hambland troll for a long time on the internet that when you say stuff like a guitarist "has no heart" or "no soul", that really just means you're not actually that familiar with that artist but feel you want to attempt to troll the fanbase with a vague, nebulous statement thats impossible to argue against

But just my .02.

You can have whatever opinion you like, I'm just curious if you can back it up with any specifics.

Ha, none i guess, lol. For some reason i always think 1.0 ended in 01, my bad.

I did see trey band twice at the greek in Berkeley, oysterhead at the greek also and vida blue on nye at roseland in nyc with trey and mike sitting in, all in 01.
