Slash's "most recent" solo album has Myles Kennedy on vocals.

Ummm most solo guitarists at one time played in bands before they went solo, so I'll go with Hendrix, Clapton, and SRV.

Good call. I guess it was opposite as far as Solo to Eagles, but for a douche he was really great.

Mark freaking Tremonti. He's had an unbelievable amount of success so far with his solo project.
After he took the Creed cuffs off, dude went mad on his next four albums. Mad I say...

Does Frank Zappa count?
No, he was always doing his own thing. He was never in a band that wasn't his own artistic creation.
Steve Vai does count however.

The Mothers were pretty collaborative early on....
If Vai counts, add Devin Townsend.

I wasn't actually hanging out with them while they were writing the music, but I just can't imagine it being anything other than Zappa being the by far central creator. I mean it was "Frank Zappa and the Mothers" and not just "The Mothers" for a reason. In his own words they were just doing covers before he joined the band. It was him that convinced them to perform original work. That is only one side, but I would tend to believe him.
ETA: It's probably fair to say that it was more collaborative early on than the later incarnations of the band.

Lindley and Thompson impress the hell out of me.

My 2 cents, Neil Young is a favorite off mine, but I never really consider him as a top guitarist. I'm more impressed with his composition and lyrics more than his technical skills. His riffs were rather simple, which does speak to his genius songwriting. But top guitarist never really entered my mind. He did have his moments of course.
And Clapton is God has to be the correct answer, right? Rock n roll HOF with 2 different bands, then as a solo artist. The question should be, who is the best guitarist from band to solo after slowhand.

Richard Thompson is the best guitarist.

Good point. Neil is in the HOF with Buffalo Springfield and then solo. He should have definitely been there with CSNY which would put him on par with Clapton.
