For a state with such storied musical roots, that list is fricking pitiful. I'd personally put Down and Mutemath above all of them. Still, the options are very limited.

Go ahead and add Neutral Milk Hotel.

Top 5 Louisiana Rock Bands

the topic is "rock bands" so this list is for actual "rock" bands. not funk bands or blues so that disqualifies a lot.

in no particular order these are my favorite rock bands that have come out of louisiana:

Dash Rip Rock. how long have they been around in some capacity? 35 years? they definitely belong on a list of rock bands from Louisiana.

Dax Riggs (acid bath, Agents, Deadboy, Dax Riggs solo) technically not born in the state, but moved here at an early age and grew up here. As far as rock/metal/hard rock, dax has done it all. Dive deep in the agents and deadboy discog and you'll find some really amazing music.

Sun Hotel this band was around for a few short years releasing some albums and EP's. Every one of them are awesome, clever, and sonically pleasant.

Neutral Milk Hotel indie rock, psych folk... whatever you want to call them, they are critically acclaimed and a huge influence to a ton of bands. one of the great rock bands to come out of the state.

Mutemath mutemath has been around since really the 90's when they began as earthsuit. they are creative and their live shows are super energetic and entertaining.

I left thou/down/goatwhore/eyehategod off this list because they are absolutely in the metal category and not "rock". Dax Riggs is included because he fronted actual rock bands like agents, deadboy, and his solo stuff.

More funk and jazz than rock, imo. That’s why they weren’t on my list.

Trust me, it gets worse, so much worse

I have heard so many bad local bands (hell, I’ve been in so many bad local bands) that my standards for “not the worst band ever” are pretty low. Chase Tyler’s music is cheesy, unoriginal, schlock, but they’re good at playing it. Neutral Snap’s music is also cheesy, unoriginal, schlock, and those f$&kers can barely play in time together. Parish County Line makes shitty music as well, and they’re shitty people, and they’re not particularly good musicians either. I saw warewolf one time and their singer was so shite-faced that he couldn’t find the key if it was written on his hand. BR is full of absolutely shite tier bands that somehow, someway get more good paying gigs than anyone else. I mean, y’all remember Allison Collins “I’mma Who Dat” video, right?

If I had to pick one reasonably popular act around BR that’s making the worst original music, and is the worst at performing it, it’d probably be Neutral Snap or Parish County Line. Chase is a clear step up from them, but still terrible music. I have to at least recognize the musicians playing bad music well in comparison to the musicians playing bad music poorly. I’ll always pick the former over the latter. If you want an example of good music played well, I recommend The Hitchhiker.

When they first got popular, I was intrigued because they were marketed as a pop punk band and were playing a lot of frat parties and tigerland bars (living BooKrewe’s dream ). Their shows always had a lot of “talent” in the audience. However, I finally went and saw them at the Varsity when they were opening up for a touring act and they were beyond horrible, like could barely play their instruments horrible, like I’m a shite tier guitarist and I sounded better playing in my childhood bedroom back in hs 12 years ago, horrible. They were a complete embarrassment. They made Sofa Kings sound like 2003-era Yellowcard.

Going back a while. If you are looking at top 5 Louisiana bands and factored in record sales, I think you have to include The Uniques, John Fred and the Playboys and Potliquor.

From an outsider and using the broad brush (eta: for Rock-n-Roll):

Neville Brothers / The Wild Tchoupitoulas - Since first time I heard Fiyo on the Bayou
Jerry Lee - thanks to who said him first
Clarence Gatemouth Brown - roots rock
Meters
Randy Newman
