I know this is a rock 'n roll thread, but I gotta mention John Coltrane. Dead at 40.

Not really. I think the rock and roll life leads to a more dominating place on the list, but I also listed Otis Redding and Tupac Shakur

Really? One of these names is not like the other one

A lot of people really liked the guy. There is still an annual festival in his hometown where people from around the country (and world for that matter) get together to celebrate his music. If you don't like him, cool on you, bro.

I think he still had plenty to write about when the plane went down/never really took off in Natchitoches.

I was at the crash site early the next morning. frick Danny Dyson, Dickie Prudhomme and those other frickheads with the Natchitoches P.D. and Sheriff's Dept. They're the reason the plane took off so abruptly.

Buddy Holly, Jimi Hendrix, Gram Parsons, Marc Bolin and Janis Joplin.

And John Coltrane, Otis Redding and, without a doubt, Duane Allman.

I'm sure these have all been mentioned before but

Jeff Buckley
Bradley Nowell
Shannon Hoon

I don't really consider Cobain, Hendrix, Morrison, etc. to have been before their time because they were already huge at the time of their death.

The 3 I listed were up and coming but not a household name at the time of their death

For me, Hendrix had more to do with unfulfilled potential more than popularity. The guy was just starting to branch out and really explore himself as an artist. I just can't imagine what he could have created if he lived longer.

That's an absolute fact. He was a musical genius as measured by any yardstick you want. When does a genius peak in what they can accomplish? Answer: you don't know because the rest of us aren't smart enough to determine the boundaries of what they're capable of.
