I hated Tool in HS, learned to love them. Saw them twice, amazing. 10,000 Days, Wings for Marie, very dark. I love "Swamp Song" reminds me of home. Aenima is just mind-blowing.

Not mocking you, genuinely want to know how this happened? I have an 18 yo and I know what look he'd get if he asked me to light up some candles and listen to some music with him...I sure as hell know what look I would have gotten if I asked my dad the same when I was young.

It’s more funny because they play the same set list every tour.

And I am huge fan.

I didn't know that. Love some Tool, but for the same tour and same set list, that seems excessive.

Is a long story but my dad and I were both musicians, in bands, and we bonded via music.

One day my mom was working an election, my dad bought a 6-pack and asked me to put on whatever my favorite album was.

It remains one of the best moments of my life

I'm still not enamored of the 10,000 days album in comparison to Lateralus, Ænima, or even Undertow, but this song right here? One of their best.

(ETA: I didn't really get into Tool until 2003 - the album that does better, year over year, is Undertow. Undertow, all the way through, may be their most consistent album, albeit without the highs of Lateralus or Ænima.)

Undertow is great, it's consistent but single toned until you get to Flood then it's over.

I love it but Aenemia to me is much stronger, the first 3 songs on both are pretty compariable, but then Aenemia takes off while undertow slogs along until the last two tracks.

I'm just here to give a shout out to the Opiate EP. It's a forgotten classic.

I bought Opiate at the record store in The Esplanade in '92 just off the album cover alone. Tool's been one of my favorites ever since.

10,000 days/ wings is amazing

This is their Stairway. It is an epic masterpiece even if it's not my favorite song by them (Pushit is). The brutal honesty and feels that come forth in this song is stunning.

While I like the rest of the record a lot, it is still their worst recording in their catalog. The biggest issue I had was their relying on riffs that were used on prior albums. There was some ambition on this record, but they fell into the trap that many bands do after many releases of sounding just a bit TOO similar. It just never gripped me the way their other albums did

I have always put this one in a 7/10 star ranking. I listen to it still all these years later, and my opinion has never changed.

Your story with your dad is a good one, because those types of things do strengthen one's affinity to a record. 10Kdays/Wings does this for me, because my grandmother suffered a serious stroke and was crippled for 10 years up to her death. The story of this song and his mother is very similar in these regards, so it hits home with me.
