Oh the end is a straight up ripoff of the end of the Grudge, but that minor complaint aside...

On first listen it sounds like aenima lateralus and 10k days during certain sections. Its beautifully written with so many well thought out layers. They've always done a great job of ascending through riffs and beats and this track is no exception.

I had that moment in around the 7-8 minute mark I think. I wish it would've taken off a little more, but the end sounds like it's about to segue into a harder track, which makes me want this album now more than ever.

Listen to the end of The Grudge. Very similar.

I've listened to the song a few times now. I like what I hear. There are a lot of call backs (like above) to previous work. I hear a good bit of stuff from Lateralus (album)s in this song, like Reflection with the drums. I also hear some Triad and Lateralus (song) riffs.

It still feels like something new. I could see this as either being the title or closing track. It feels more like a closing to me when I listen to the lyrics.

A Lifelong Tool Fan's Desperate Plea For the Band to Never Release the New Album

quote:

The truth is, I don’t want a new album. I haven’t for quite some time. I’m too old to love it like I once would have. The title alone has inoculated me with fear. As a hardcore fan, I think the most important thing they can do is not only push back the release of this new album for another 13 years, but also keep their music off streaming services, pull all existing CDs and vinyl off the shelves of every known record store in the free world, dispatch members of the Tool Army Fan Club all over Earth to collect CDs, tapes and records from anyone willing to part ways for the cause. Then, every copy collected along with the master recordings will then be placed in a vault so deep and so heavily guarded it will make NORAD look like a public park. This scarcity will only fuel the myth and legend and drive the hunger for this new album and keep Tool sacred. As a devoted, lifelong hardcore fan I have learned this: some things are never ready because they’re never done, and in doing so they become immortal.

I as keeping up with this thread and the recap towards the bottom has it listed. I want to say I saw it elsewhere more firm. Consumed lots of tool tidbits the past few days so let me see if I can find where else it was.

This is an amazing track. The movement of the music is fantastic. The lyrics are solid. Overall, I'm very pleased.

Track is solid. I’d be surprised if every single song on the album wasn’t as good or better. That’s just who they are. They don’t mail in shite.

I’d be willing to bet that descending and invincible have also been mixed differently than what they played live.

Vocals have a very Eat the Elephant APC feel

I didn't get this vibe at all, and honestly this is probably sacrilege, but Eat the Elephant is my most listened to Maynard work by a mile. Maybe when he comes in at the very beginning, but it very much sounds like Tool to me. There's a darkness and heaviness in his Tool vocals where Eat the Elephant is sarcastic and light at times.

I really liked this song. I was more into the odder elements at the beginning than the more traditional Tool elements at the end, but I'm a sucker for classical instruments used well in rock songs. The 10 minutes definitely flew by.

People are gonna hate on this album because it isn't Aenima 2.0 just like they did the last two. This isn't the angry group of 20-30yr olds from the 90s. Aside from Chancellor, all of these guys are in their mid to late 50s and have started families since the last album. Different people than they were 20+ years ago.

I'm talking about the overall quality. The vocals on ETE are some of Maynard's clearest and crisp ever recorded and this has that same great quality.

Not talking about the style.

The vocals are definitely TOOL

As are the lyrics. I was a little worried, but the three songs I've heard definitely make me feel MJK is able to compartmentalize the writing style of each project.

I just burnt a CD with 3 (!) TOOL songs on it from this album and the runtime, for 3 songs, is over 35 minutes.

Listened to the title track. It's good. It's tool. I'm a fan already, and I will like it even more the longer I listen to it and digest it.

Nothing they make will ever top Lateralus. That album was transcendent in a number of ways. It was truly pure genius. The three tracks I've heard from this album are definitely tool and I can't wait for more.

I agree that this definitely seems like the album opener, I wouldn't put it past Maynard since ETE was the opening track on the last APC album.

Love that he is going with the same vocal style as ETE, that was the best part of that album for sure.

I know on Amazon there is a set list of tracks, unnamed tracks, but FI appears to be the opening track

Agreed 100%

In fact I agree with pretty much your entire post

Lateralus was a water shed moment in music. I remember popping it in, hearing the machine start up noise, and The Grudge to this day. My mouth was wide open the entire time.

FI intro sounds like that, a machine starting up sorta.

I bet it's the lead track to the album

Holy crap, listening on a good system transforms this already amazing song.

Crack it up to 11, its what TOOL deserves

I was thinking the same exact thing.

What's funny for me is that Lateralus was my first exposure to Tool. I was a big APC fan before it came out and heard that MJK was also the singer in Tool. So I bought Lateralus when it came out and HATED it. I had never heard music like it before and I just kept waiting for the songs to start. I felt ripped off! Only song I liked was Schism.

Needless to say the album grew on me (over a long period of time) and it's probably my favorite of theirs.

The jam at the end is great. Drumming is insane. Excited to give this a few more listens to let it all sink in.
