I woke up this morning after having listened to this album many times. I think I'm finally ready to give my rankings:

1. Lateralus
2. Aenima
3. Fear Inoculum
4. 10,000 days
5. Undertow
6. Opiate

With that said, all of these albums are total masterpieces and even though Opiate is last, it is still better than 90% of the garbage out there.

My list as of today is. I could see it sliding behind Aenima though long term, but it's the new toy. I could also see it climbingh past 10k days too as I grow to appreciate it more. Ultimately, i love it.

1. Lateralus
2. 10,000 Days
3. Fear Inoculum
4. Aenima
5. Undertow
6. Opiate

Title track is very "Right in Two"-ish. That's a good thing.

I’m hooked on this album. Whoever it was earlier that compared it to a movie is spot on. This is my first tool listen to a newly released album and holy shite I am floored.

There were rumblings about this album being a double disc

This thing is 10 tracks, 86 minutes runtime. Wouldn't that have been a double disc during the vinyl era? I mean, a vinyl album is about 30 minutes per side, max, under normal pop/rock music dynamic ranges.

This is a very refined, mature sounding Tool. The only problem I'm having is - it certainly feels like we've covered this ground before.

Don't get me wrong, there are so few rock acts doing anything new, and Tool is right up there as one of my very favorite bands of all time. I dig it, but I'm going to need a half dozen more listens to really evaluate it.

ETA: Descending is the standout track. And 7empest and Invincible are right there for the #2 spot.

I don't see myself ever listening to this album without quality noise cancelling headphones.

I just can't see how most of y'all have it ranked over the rawness of Opiate or the masterpiece that is Undertow. However, this may just be the nostalgia talking for me.

I'm in the same boat. I even suggested this album needed one of those type tunes to complete me.

However, I don't think I could rank the albums only because each day it would change with my mood.

I don't see how this could be said at all.

From time to time, you can hear old riffs, such as Fear Inoculum where it has some elements of The Grudge.

Huge Tool fan here, and while after 6-7 listens, I'm not quite ready to anoint it top 2.

In my opinion...

#1 - Aenima

#2 - Lateralus

#3 - Fear Inoculem

#4 - 10,000 days

#5 - Opiate.

Obviously you cant go wrong with any tool record. And it would't surprise me to see FI climb the ladder the more I listen.

While Lateralus is fantastic, I would never rate that over AEnima. Could be nostalgia, but that album was a fricking 10. Crazy that everyone selects Lateralus #1 on their list. Then again, it is Tool, and there isn't a right or wrong answer here.

I wouldn't call it retreading old ground, but there are definitely callbacks to older tracks

FI has lots of Grudge references

Pneuma intro is basically a clean version of the Schism riff that plays after "between supposed lovers"

Descending has the low synth line a little over halfway through that is extremely similar to the one in Reflection

god i love this album. gets better on every listen. impossible for me to do a ranking right now because I haven't listened to 7empest enough yet. the track thats grown on me the most is Pneuma, the last 2 minutes are mind melting and make me emotional for some reason. Invincible is probably my favorite track right now, the vocal melodies are just beautiful and I love the groove.

You forgot Decending has some Wings of Mary in there. I've noticed the other observations as well.

I think it's just a good evolution of their other songs almost like part 3 in some instances.

No, people already knew there were multiple tracks over 10m long. Rumblings from inside their camp said a double disc could happen with the material they had.

They were right about the multiple 10m tracks, so I believe they are also correct about more content.

You going to see them in concert? Tickets for their fall tour go on sale this week.

They are coming to Glendale, AZ next month....think I know what I’m getting my husband as an early Christmas present.

Get Chocolate Chip Trip. Others are ok, but not necessary.
