There were dozens of bad songs for every good song.

Bias is that the cream rose to the top and stayed to represent the decade.

A bunch of the 80s and 90s music was garbage and there is a lot of really good music now. Stop listening to the radio, I guess.

Glorification of instant gratification and the complete corporate studio takeover of music and radio and TV is the answer. It started in the 80s but it culminated in the early 2000s and continues today. I mean can you name a radio station or TV channel that just plays new and diverse music? Everything has been corporately compartmentalized and sterilized and washed out to filter down the the most bland generic nonsense. It takes years of hard work and dedication to form a rock band and become elite at your instruments and find your sound and make songs, etc.... It take time and dedication to learn to rap and flow perfectly, etc... The studios and radios stopped investing in that and turned to what makes them a quick buck, which for rock is an easily marketed and average solo or group of musicians playing songs and music written by someone else or a pop idol singing into an autotuner with a Mac behind them or brocountry which is basically the same song and same chord progression recycled ad nauseum. They don't take a chance on new and risky musicians because some frick heads in a board room can't see past the quick buck and the bottom line. There's still some good music being made out there, but it's solidly overwheled by the sheer amount of dog shite pumped out and promoted over it and it's annoyingly hard to find because there's no standard public outlet for it

Hm. What happened in the early 2000’s that made music execs look to increase profitability of music?

You got older. People were saying the exact same things in the 80's and 90's about music sucking and being much better in the 60's and 70's. I remember. I was there, and I don't have the memory of a goldfish. Have the self awareness to recognize your own bias.

The Berlin Wall came down, the Soviet Union broke up and all of a sudden hundreds of British and other European songwriters had to come up with something else to write about besides cruise missiles.

The "Cash Me Ousside" girl is currently touring and is one of the hottest musical artists on the recent scene. That probably tells you all you need to know.

I don't know about anybody else but I'm perfectly happy being out of the musical loop at this point. I find little gems here and there but most of it can stay completely out of my orbit and I'm 100% fine with that.

And there's a lot of good music from the 00's and 10's. Sorry you've apparently missed out on it. Sometimes you just have to take the initiative and seek it out on your own.

My favorite music is from about '65 to '95 so I share some of your opinions. Obviously a big part of it is that pop music has become more narrow in the last 20 years.

While I'm getting older and struggle to find new music that I like at times, I still hear really good stuff on the Jam On and (the newer songs of) Spectrum.

Also, when I'm able to make some of the Acadiana area festivals, I realize that there is a lot of really good music being created in that tiny corner of the world. Probably in many other corners but without the marketing aspect.

Music to me is just getting better. every year I find some absolutely amazing album. Will we have another year like 1991? No. We won't. That was probably the best year of music in my lifetime.

But we will have more 2014. Hell last year was fricking fantastic. This year is also pretty tight, and its only june 15.

Relatively new pop that should get you going

Radio is dead as a platform for new music thanks to downloading/streaming and the Internet as a whole. Therefore, radio execs have no choice but to go the easy route for a quick buck. It cannot afford to invest airtime in artists that produce music that is outside the box.

These threads are always pathetic. Music is just as great as it ever was and with the internet providing accessibility to a seemingly endless amount of content you really have to be lazy to not find current artists, albums, and songs you like.

Lmao

There is a lot of great music today, it’s just not all over the radio. But, music is easier to discover and there’s more of it today than ever. Get on Spotify or whatever streaming service and you can find stuff that you like.

I agree with pretty much everything you said but I don’t think it’s that hard to find. I’ve heard of quite a few bands just from this board, I’ve heard of some from reddit, and then a lot i come across on Spotify just by looking through the weekly playlists and similar artists, etc

We need more angst.

Rock has always been best when dealing with either anti establishment ideas or introspective themes, in a spiritual sense. All of this died somewhere in the 90s
