Saw them live at The Point (RIP) in around 92 or so. Absolutely amazing show. Caught them at Lollapalooza the following year and again amazing. My top albums:

If it were sports i would say a player of equal caliber would probably be someone who just barely missed the hall but for music i think they get in

Based on some of the bands in the R&R Hall, yes they should get in.
That said, they used to be one of, if not my FAVORITE band. Now with the exception of Gish and a few other songs here and there, whenever I hear SP I think , Damn, Billy Corgan is a whiny little bitch.

I liked a lot of shitty bands growing up that have no bearing on what I like now. What's your point? KISS is nothing special. They were a corporate machine and that's about it.

I didn't. I still like most of the stuff I listened to growing up. But then I've always had a broad taste in music and not much disgust me more than musical snobbery.

Actually, the truth is just the exact opposite. They got popular the old fashioned way, by playing their asses off night after night in every town they could. Their 'army' was well stocked before they ever started selling tons of records (which they ultimately did once they released a live album that caught what the studio never had been able to) And they wrote some damn fine rock 'n roll songs along the way. Not everything has to have a dozen time changes or talk about existential bullshite. Not that that's bad either, but it all has it's place at a given time.

Easily a first-ballot Hall-of-Fame band. They're not my cup o' tea, but they're getting in as soon as they're eligible.

I know what you mean about Smashing Pumpkins playing live. I grew up on them, caught them at Municipal Auditorium opening up for the RHCP in '91, and have followed them ever since.
What I've gathered from them playing live is they intentionally stretch the live take of a song to its limits. A lot of this has to do with Jimmy Chamberlin. As a drummer, it's something I love about them live. He throws in fills and changes up parts of songs to not be as safe as the studio take. It comes across as sloppy sounding sometimes and sometimes it vastly improves the song. Early on in their Siamese Dream days, they were all so coked up that the tempo would be sped up to almost double time (Geek USA).
Very solid band though. I must have heard Bury Me and Tristessa 1,000 times in my life and those songs still "do it" for me.
I always liked the original lineup, with D'Arcy. She didn't contribute a whole lot, but they were a different band with her in it. Too bad she had to become a crackhead. Would love to see a reunion show with the original lineup.

The one time I saw them was after they fired Chamberlin. The dude from Filter replaced him.
