This little-known short song by Elton John gets my vote:

Goodbye

The last song on the Madman Across the Water album, it seems to be about someone dying and he nailed it here.

Ben Harper - drugs don’t work

The Verve Originally wrote it, but Ben Harper puts the extra “sad” emotion in it

“Hold on Magnolia” by Songs: Ohia.

The way he sings “I know what you’re trying to be” has always stuck with me. Amazing music, amazing album.

It all rolls into one, And nothing comes for free
There's nothing you can hold, For very long
And when you hear that song, Come crying like the wind
It seems like all this life, Was just a dream

Two Daughters and a Beautiful Wife - Drive By Truckers

I can't believe this hasn't been posted yet, especially since I already posted in this thread

The song is about the Harvey Family who were brutally murdered in the basement of their home during a murder spree in Richmond, VA in 2006. The details of the crime are horrifying and harrowing

The song is from the perspective of the husband, who was also respected musician, waking up at the gates of heaven and remembering what happened.
