So modern music sucks because Frank Ocean had a bad Coachella performance? Maybe he realizes it's a vapid shite festival and did the bare minimum. I'm not a big fan but he is talented. Big Thief, Spoon, Kevin Morby, Fontaines D.C., The Sheepdogs, Angel Olsen, Charlie Crocket, Ty Segall, Viagra Boys, Marcus King, Ron Gallo, Kurt Vile, Courtney Barnett, Cage the Elephant, Car Seat Headrest, Waxahatchee....lot of great young musicians putting out quality. Angel Olsen and Father John Misty were really good live this past weekend.

Speaking of the alt rock scene, it’s pretty crazy seeing how popular bands like Green Day, MCR, and Paramore are with Gen Z considering they hit their peaks back in the 2000s. Hell even blink got a massive crowd during their surprise Coachella set last week. I think a part of that has to do with the lack of any big modern rock acts. Other than MGK there really isn’t much out there in terms of popularity. Another part is that their older siblings, cousins, or in some cases parents all listened to that music and passed it down. Also you have MGK dropping pop punk albums, Olivia Rodrigo doing some pop punk stuff, and Billie Ellish who’s admitted to being an Emo kid preforming at Coachella with Hayley Williams

Yeah but none of those bands are good and most of them are like 40 years old and came out before 2010

Charlie Crockett has one good song, Jamestown ferry. Which is a cover.

Society is losing its musical ability because there are so many other forms of entertainment and distractions. Also music from back in the day sucked too y’all just don’t want to admit it

It’s a bunch of kids in a field saying “dude music sucks now I was born in the wrong generation”

Eventually they’ll grow out of it like kids my age grew out of boomer music and realize it’s not that great

It’s really not that far off from today, right now the hot 100 has a strong amount of pop and rap, but there’s some country and a bit of rock. Point is pop has always dominated the industry whether it’s the pop rock of the 50’s and 60’s or the pop of today. As far as rock goes, it’s not as popular as it used to be but that’s because there hasn’t been a true breakout band for some time now.

The last few bands/artists to crack the top 10 are Paramore who beat out Taylor Swift and Bad Bunny, Linkin Park, and despite the amount of hate MGK who topped the charts twice with his past two pop punk albums

The point is that in the past “pop music” was comprised of all different genres. His point would’ve been better made if he had picked 1974, 1984, 1994, or even 2004.

Thing is, back in the day traditional radio and record companies were much more healthy than they are today. They were the gatekeepers and filtered out a lot of the non talented people making shite music. Sure if you had deep pockets you could finance, record and press your own records, but no one was really gonna hear them unless one of the two I mentioned jumped on board. If you had enough talent and ambition you would rise to the top and someone would notice you. Many artists that hit in the 80s had been toiling away in little known bands for years before they got their break. Same for alot of 70s artists.

Now radio and record companies aren’t filters or gatekeepers, they are followers and that makes for tons of bad music made by tons of bad “artists”
Now people with little talent can record something on their phone and instantly disseminate it onto the world. Get one “influencer” on social media to help it go viral, and bam, you’re off. But just like social media gives drooling retards a voice that shouldn’t have one, the same applies to some of the people making music. Combine that with generations that have now been conditioned to accept less from songwriting/production/musicianship and you get where we sit currently(I could go on all day). On the plus side, with the ease of which you can get music heard, you get lots of really talented artists that can gain massive popularity without being controlled by radio conglomerates and record labels.

Ah, I always enjoy the grumpy, middle-aged white men threads.

Considering the median age of posters on the music board is 65, grumpy middle aged threads are actually a delicacy

I don't think anyone is saying there is no good music. That's an entirely different thread. I have loved music from every decade starting with the 50s through the present. I listen to a lot of music made recently. That said, I have never seen it worse than now.

I mean, at least three people on the first page of this thread said (or implied) as much.

Music itself, or the music industry? Why in your opinion makes it so bad today?

I only saw one that could even be argued as saying this.

Both really.

Meh, the music is bad because people have become lazy and too into quick success/pleasure. Streaming is probably one of the big issues. No one cares about albums anymore. A lot of this is something I just have spent a lot of time on since I am not a music writer

People around here say that bands I saw at voodoo when I was 15 are “up and coming” and proof that there’s still good music being made
