Houser couldn't carry Jimmy's guitar case if we are talking about playing ability, but his sound was perfect for WSP. I would give up a lot just to see him one more time and have a beer. RIP Mikey

The McConnell years were when they lost me. Still love the old stuff, but haven't really gotten back in to the newer version of WSP since Mikey passed.

Sam Holt should be lead and they should have kept Randall Bramblett on sax.

Bramblett was never in the band. Toured with them in summer 02. That was a weird time

George got a pretty raw deal, IMO. They never should have hired the guy. But somebody had to be hated for taking Houser's place.

It was a convenient hire. I'm not sure people hate George. I think most could see the situation. He is at best, a good college band player. I liked Beanland and Kudzu Kings were a decent band. But that's about it.

I love listening to studio Panic, especially Everyday, Mamma's Kitchen, and Aint Life Grand. Great albums.

Widespread Panic is nothing more than a college frat party band that made it.

George McConnell is one hell of a dude, panic just wasnt his style...

That could be said for a lot of bands. Most jam-type bands going all the way back to the Stones. They wrote cool songs and had a unique voice and the instrumentalists were very solid. Jerry died, making it good timing for them. They worked hard, and deserve the rewards.

No doubt about it.

Name one band from Athens that wasn't. So I'd give them a little more credit than that.

To me, Tyrone Smith Revue is the ultimate frat party band.

REM is not a 'party' band

Beanland was a blast back in the day. Saw them many times at the South End in Memphis. George and JoJo were awesome together. George just wasn't a good fit with WSP.

It wasn't perfect for Widespread Panic... It WAS Widespread Panic. The music, 75% of the lyrics, it was his band and JB sang most of the songs because Houser was so fricking shy. Panic has written maybe 3 or 4 good songs since 2002 because the guy who made the music is dead.

I really like Saint Ex. Story of Saint Ex

Bust it Big is one hell of a get down song.

Tortured Artist is turning into a great song as well.

hell yes! I was likely at that show. They were a lot of fun. Kent is probably their pinnacle. I know Colin and Joe Boone (original bassist) well. Ran with Joe in high school. They are actually playing a reunion show in a few weeks here in Memphis which will be their first time back together in over a decade. I'll be there.

I figured that. I'm actually surprised they didn't get bigger. Was it a fallout with them or what? I know they were starting to gain some popularity then *bam* disappeared.

most of the band came from money and didn't really have aspirations of becoming rock stars - they were just having fun with it while they were young. Before they had to go to work in the "real world". Selvidge was/is a hell of a guitarist.
