I'm a bit of a music snob, but these are relatively unknown bands that can be a real eye opener for some of yuns, time-stamped for the impatient:

Nero di Marte
Elder
Om
ISIS
Sleep
HoF
Electric Wizard

too many great heavy songs have been released the last 8+ years it's very difficult unless you get hyper specific on the genre

I'm a big music fan and although i'm older i really try to keep up with new trends in music. It gets harder and harder because it all comes at me from so many different places.

It started with the radio, then mtv, then satellite radio and now everywhere. Trying to follow new music nowadays and identify specific genre's is really difficult.

Anyway here goes.

You're using the word "greatest". For some reason, right now "she sells sanctuary" comes to mind.

Sleep

Few people love the stoner legends more than I do, but Sleep's Holy Mountain was released 26 years ago. That hardly constitutes as "modern", in my opinion.

Still, solid choice.

In response to the OP's thread, I think I have a slight bit of familiarity with this topic. I hosted a college radio show centered around metal (I know, it's almost the equivalent of being a self-proclaimed music snob. ), and I made a point to routinely feature artists of the past 15 years.

Admittedly, my taste tends to gravitate towards more progressive extreme metal.

"Deadhead" by The Devin Townsend Band

"Oblivion" by Mastodon

"Libera Part I (Saturnine Spheres" by Ne Obliviscaris

"Drown Within" by Ulcerate

"Bleed" by Meshuggah

"Heir Apparent" by Opeth

"Le Toit Du Monde" by Gorguts

"Isak" by Baroness

"Flying Whales" by Gojira

"Prancer" by The Dillinger Escape Plan

"Cockroach King" by Haken

"Rosemary" by Deftones

"Gettysburg Trilogy" by Iced Earth

Opeth - Blackwater Park has got to be one of the best metal songs in recent history. When Mikael comes is with "Lepers Coiled neath the tree" with that layered scream, holy shite!

And then here when you think the song is slowing down and he enters again with "We have all lost it now" and that riff!

For the last 5 years of metal I'd consider Baroness' Purple album as tops of the class, Gojira's Magma as a runner up.

From My Arms, Your Hearse to Watershed, Akerfeldt couldn't be touched as a songwriter. Few bands have ever expressed melodicism, aggression, rhythm, and atmosphere so effectively.

As much as I love the titular track, "The Leper Affinity" and "The Drapery Falls" MIGHT be even better. There are just so many career-defining songs on that album alone.

Solid taste, Sir.

What's funny is that I consider Magma to be the weakest release in Gojira's discography since their debut. "The Shooting Star", "Stranded" (which took quite a bit of getting used to because of the pinch harmonic riff), and "Silvera" (one of Joe's best riffs to date) are all excellent tracks. However, the ambient passages on the latter half of the record just seem to fall flat. What's disappointing is that I know that they are capable of successfully writing such pieces. After all, it was the atmosphere of From Mars to Sirius that made me fall in love with the band.

Different strokes for different folks I suppose. The fact is that they're probably one of the top-5 live acts in metal today due to the sheer intensity and consistency of their performances.

Me too. It's a way better album than Magma. I was really disappointed in Magma. From Mars to Sirius has some really killer songs on it. That whole album hits hard.

Not greatest but “Square Hammer” and “Thanks for all the Fish” are the catchiest rock songs I’ve heard by a good margin. “Judas” would also be on that list.

Anything by:

Devin Townsend
Gojira
BTBAM
Haken
Animals as Leaders
David Maxim Micic

Gojira is heavier than a train station.

BTBAM - Parallax II is one of the best prog metal albums of that last decade, IMO.
