I love the Dead, but I believe the Pigpen era is the era that could be most appealing to the majority of the USA. Back when the Dead were a blues band.

Does anyone remember when The Reveille announced that The Grateful Dead were in talks to play in Tiger Stadium?
Apparently, that report ended up killing the deal. It would have been the first concert ever in Tiger Stadium. The Reveille announced the cancelation of the concert in an all-black cover page.

I liked The Grateful Dead especially when Pigpen was in the band but I think CCR, The Beach Boys and the Allman Brothers are better choices for the most American of all bands.

I think the way the Dead did it - 100% DIY and spanned such a broad catalog of musical styles puts them in front. Their entire ethos was pure Americana.

that was 1977. The incident regarding a possible stadium show (I don’t remember it but the poster who mentioned it does) would have been in the 90s when the dead were…playing stadium shows
