When did it occur? I keep wondering how did we go from bands like the Beatles and Led Zeppelin topping the charts to present day where the likes of Taylor Swift and Katy Perry rule the airwaves.

If you think about it, music has sort of been on a decline complexity wise since Classical and Jazz. Music is shorter now, with less change ups or substance involved. It's really depressing to think about that bands that are on the caliber of the Beatles will never get the recognition it deserves because vapid pop music has taken over everything.

present day success is not so much measured on air rotation on chart topability anymore. It's a new ballgame and has been since the advent of the interwebz, brah

Yes I understand the game has changed but all of those cruddy pop bands top the Spotify charts too.

Crappy pop music was topping the charts long before The Beatles and Zeppelin even existed.

I detest 90% of all music today. It's just awful.

The good stuff is still out there, it just isn't frequently played on the radio.

pop music has always been fairly shitty
there's been some good songs sprinkled in throughout the years

1970... see for yourself

1990

If you aren't hearing any good music these days then you aren't trying to.

Because this is truly the sum of all new music, isn't it?

Lowest common denominator rises to the top in any endeavor in today's mass consumption society.....music, literature, food, architecture (housing mostly),etc. Quality sells but not much.

Go to any music festival. Any of them.

Bonnaroo
Coachella
Jazz Fest
Wakarusa

They are littered with talented bands that get plenty of recognition. Who cares if their songs aren't featured on American Idol? The music is still out there, and thanks to the Internet, it's easier to access than ever before.

I think it's been like that since pretty much forever. I don't think more complex tastes in music, etc. has ever been typical for the most prevelant tastes with few exceptions. It's like CapPanic said. If you can't find quality out there in some form then you probably aren't looking very hard or in the right places. If anything we have easier access to quality nowadays with the availability of information. It might be overwhelming though just because there's so much to look through. OP's position is a fallacy.

mainstream radio country has de-evolved to hip hop EDM influenced pop music with a slight twang.

that's what happens when LA/NY producers invade nashville to "sex up" some of these "artists". They are more of creations than anything real. I blame a lot of this on all the shite that comes out of north georgia. a lot of wannabe white rappers who want to go to nashville to "make it".

what a shite show...
