i would dispute this. Its been a fantastic year for music, incredible stuff is coming out. just b.c you aren't listenting to it doesn't mean its not there.
2014 is the best year for music since 2009.

There is plenty of great music out there...you just have to go find it.

I'm assuming you are older, but how could you even determine this? You've probably listened to music more than most, but listening to more music? I doubt it. It sounds like you've been listening to the same thing for 30 years.

How many songs can you fit on your Zune?

But, rock and roll will never die. The pendulum will swing back - in fact, it's overdue.
Musical taste change & "Rock music" will be a distant memory just as all dorms of Pop music
Jazz which is the most sophisticated Pop Music ever was Hot ,exciting & beyond huge once (An era in America is referred to as the "Jazz Age" ).
Its limping along with a very small niche audience today considered high art & second only to European Art Music(or "Classical Music") in sophistication . It somehow transitioned from "Hot " dance music to high .art & as far as Popular music goes its dead.
Unlike Jazz no one will ever mistake Rock for High Art. Rock is popular music(no matter what their fans choose to believe) & like all pop music its subject to the whims/musical taste of the public.

When people say "The Death of Music", what the really mean is "the death of new music on the radio that I like to listen to", which generally means "the death of rock n roll on the radio". That is very well documented.

You're like 24 years old and still stuck on listening to Led Zeppelin and have never ventured out.

So you have The Archies - Sugar, Sugar on your playlist? Or do you prefer the top 10 hits of 1978?

quote:I second that. Just bought my 29 year old son a Spotify subscription and will encourage him to listen to Classical as well as Sam Cooke, Jim Croce, Otis Redding, the Supremes and Marvin Gaye.
I detest 90% of all music today. It's just awful.
This is one of my faves: LINK

The Death of Music
Look no further than the greedy record companies & promoters themselves. They don't want to find talent or creativity- it's ALL & ONLY about money today!! I understand this has always been present to some degree, but today it is more evident than ever before. Record company execs realize how easy it is to sell re-cycled trash by way of media blitz to kids. Maybe MTV had a big part in this too- when music became more about the video than the actual sound of a record/song. Sex sells! But that being said, the attempt to make Taylor Swift look appealing or sexy is downright laughable. She is nothing more than a dork with a lot of make-up. Would Katy Perry be as popular without her chest? Now Madonna, she became popular due to being controversial, much like Lady Gaga today. But I still don't think of Madonna as being a real talent- she was simply lucky. Beyoncé? Give me a break- worthless.

Aggressive corporate labels, loss of musicianship, lack of real talent finders, decline of rolling Stone magazine, classic rock radio stations, death of mtv.
It's not that music has died. It's that the ability to find and promote new music has died. In order to find it you either have to make the rounds on the outdoor concert circuit or try very hard in multiple message boards. There's no big radio station playing new rock songs. No big magazine covering the forefront of rock music. And music labels couldn't give less of a shite about up and coming rock bands.

Or you can spend a few minutes and create a Pandora station with all your favorite artists and sit back and wait for Pandora to introduce new stuff to you. You can also do similar things with Spotify. It really doesn't take all that much effort, but if you really want to dig and find new stuff, you are right.
