I think as well we are reaching a point with rock and roll music that nothing can stand the test of time.

You realize the Beatles broke up 40 years ago. Certainly people came along and did things better over 40 years. Rock music is just that old now. Did Bill Hailey and the Comets hold up well to Led Zepplin? No.

The Beatles. Especially early Beatles IS starting to age and become cliche

The strength of the Beatles will always be in the writing. Those are well written songs, but no one will confuse Ringo Starr for Neil Piert.

Robert Johnson? Does he stand the test of time? Not really, but any blues guitar player will damn near fight you if you bad mouth him.

We are comparing apples to oranges. I feel though. Greatness overall vs. great musicians.

Yngwie Malmsteen can play circles around George Harrison, but I cannot name one malmsteen song.

I want to break Yngwie's left hand because mine will NEVER be able to do what his does. But his music has never made me or probably ANYONE want to cry.

Again apples to oranges. And I am intoxicated now.

Nobody could live up to as much hype as the Beatles got. Just like all the other bands that have been mentioned, the Beatles put out some real crap at times - mostly too cute McCartney songs. But Rubber Soul, Revolver and Abbey Road are three of the greatest albums ever made - period!

Led Zepplin and all the heavy metal crap they inspired are the band that is really overrated in my opinion. I was a Doors fanatic and they are still on my playlist. Stones put out some great individual songs in the 60's and early 70's but other than that they suck.

The Beach Boys? Come on, maybe three decent songs in their whole career.

So yeah, The Beatles best stuff is still great and always be. For the guy that said that they couldn't sing? You shouldn't be allowed to listen to music. You are tone dear!

Led Zeppelin was a great band for the first four albums. After that there was too much production and not enough blues.

The Beatles changed music in the 60s just like Louis Armstrong changed Jazz in the 20s.

The Beatles music will be around years and years from now just like "classical" European music is today. Most other stuff will be forgotten. I'd say it holds up.

The difference is this: In 200 years, will serious music afficionados know something about Zeppelin, Hendrix, and most of these other artists? Probably. But the Beatles will be part of the cultural heritage, and the average decently educated man on the street will know who they were.

Did you read the OP? The point of this little thought exercise is to assume the Beatles are Sonic Youth -- i.e. they are not famous for being famous -- judge them on their music alone.

And you reply that the difference is cultural heritage. I think this maybe means you agree with me.

The same way most people know of Beethoven and Mozart, whether they know anything else about classical music or not.

People don't know Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, etc. because of cultural heritage, homie. It's because of the music. Indeed, I can think of no better example of music holding up over time than Beethoven, Mozart, Bach.

A great group of musicians, but not really song writers as they stole most of their songs.

If you're talking about personal preference, there's really no use in discussing the matter because that's just individual taste

There is little I enjoy more than when the token "guy who wants people to think he is smart" posts some dumb shite like this.

How else can music be evaluated, smart guy? If it isn't personal preference, then it's data representing the collective personal preferences of the masses. Which, to be quite clear, is still personal preference.

Oh wait...there is one other way. The ole' "read the pitchfork review and then regurgitate the substance of said pitchfork review to others as if they were your original thoughts" method. I imagine this is what you do.

Plus I'm one smart motherfricker and have an incredible wealth of knowledge regarding popular music from the 1930's to the present.

If you can't articulate thoughts while drunk, then you ain't that smart, homeboy. But, to be clear, this has absolutely no bearing on the question of whether you have an inordinately small penis.

quote:

Let's just say this for now. You have to consider the historical and cultural context in which The Beatles came to be. After they were given free reign, they did things collectively that hadn't been done before (although they borrowed a lot). It is not an overstatement to say that they changed popular music.

Let me just say this for now. Read my first three or four posts in this thread. As you are reading, make note that all of the above-quoted is obviated by what you're reading. Make further note that the above-quoted falls outside of the clearly articulated purview of this discussion, and can therefore be fairly characterized as a waste of otherwise fine electrons.

in this thread. Beatles > Led Zeppelin. No contest.

Can't wait for your next one about how you don't understand all this Bob Dylan hype and that you think he sucks at guitar.

I agree completely. That's the kind of post that won't make friends but was completely necessary. I can hand pick a few songs post Led Zeppelin IV that are really strong. The rest is "meh"

I cant believe this is actually a topic... if you don't like them fine, but don't try to justify that by saying their music doesn't age well...

They are the greatest... end of.

You're seriously saying that Led Zeppelin couldn't write songs? Please go beyond "Whole Lotta Love" and "You Shook Me".
