Y’all do realize that good music is still made, right? FM radio is a dead medium to people under 30, and classic rock stations only play stuff over 25 years old, so you’re not likely to hear it, but it’s out there. You just have to know where to look. It’s kinda like being a rock n roll fan in England in the 60’s Pirate Radio era.

Just because I wasn’t a teenager when Led Zeppelin or Poison was popular doesn’t mean I didn’t grow up with great music.

I pondered including a comment in my reply along these lines but left it out.

Last week I had a conversation with one of my music fan/nut friends where he mentioned that his music collection included at least one record issued in every year from the early 60s to about 2018. So I surveyed mine.

Found that I have at least 1 record issued every year from 2021 back to... at least 1944. 1943 of course was a tough time to release records given the war - and I probably do have something even from then included in a jazz compilation.

Absolutely false. There are multiple orders of magnitude more music being made today. There is so much great music, that it is almost impossible to keep track of it all, it’s just not getting played on fm radio, so boomers assume it doesn’t exist. They too often listen exclusively to classic rock stations and wonder why they never hear any new good music. Gee, can’t imagine why that would be…

I’m sorry bro country sucks, but that’s not the only country music out there either. I’m sorry your fm dial only gets crappy Nashville pop country stations, so you assume good music isn’t being made.’

Today, good music, like a good job that can support a middle class family in a safe and modest neighborhood on a single income right out of hs, isn’t just handed to you. You actually have to look. You forget that you kinda had to look back then too. Top 40 radio was absolutely trash in the 70’s with forgettable singer songwriters and disco. The 80’s pop music wasn’t much better. If you were lucky, you had an alternative station that was playing all of those now classic rock hits you love so much, but it wasn’t always available. Today, there’s few stations playing the new rock music, so you assume it’s all imagine dragons garbage and lumineers, but it’s not.

So, yeah, I get a little offended at the folks in their 50’s and 60’s that right off all new music so flippantly without putting forth a modicum of the effort they used to expend back in the “good ol’ days” to find that great music. If you’re tech-savvy enough to post on TD, you have no excuses for not being able to find a constant stream of great new rock music other than willful ignorance so you can continue to feel superior about how much better it was in your glory years.

You want some good new music? Listen to The Struts, Clutch, the L.A. Maybe, Dirty Honey, South of Eden, Jade Bird, Seven Year Witch, Moon Fever, Joyous Wolf, True Villains, Jive Mother Mary, the Black Moods, or whatever group Jack White is fronting this week.

Possibly. Very little of it will survive one year. It's mostly shite.

I would not know. I do not discuss music with boomers.

I’m sorry your fm dial
I never listen to FM

No. There was trash. There were also all time classics. Now? Nothing.

Well, that sounds like a personal problem.

Possibly.

It’s a scientific fact. The growth is due to the proliferation of cheap equipment and software to diy record, mix, master, and release music without having to deal with the record label industry anymore.

Yeah, but with sheer volume comes a lot of quality hidden in the rough. Big cities don’t naturally produce a higher percentage of hotties than small southern towns, but they have so many more people, that even with a lower hit rate, they produce way way way more talent. There’s a lot of shite out there, but there’s also a ton of greatness too. You just have to be willing to look for it.

Now? Nothing.

bullshite. Uptown Funk was a huge hit on top 40 radio that has been coopted by party bands everywhere. Sign of the Times by Harry Styles is an excellent ballad on top 40 radio. Shut Up and Dance by Walk the Moon is a great pop rock song. Leave the Door Open by Silk Sonic is awesome, I even enjoyed Dynomite by K-pop boy band BTS. I don’t hate Blinding Lights by The Weeknd either, though they’re not my cup of tea typically. All top 40 hits, all likely to be heard 20 years from now as nostalgic tracks.

ETA: I don’t care if you’re technically a boomer or gen-xer or lost generation, silent generation or what have you, but you definitely exhibit the stereotypical boomer attitude that condemns all new music without ever hearing it or even trying to find it.

I’m a boomer and have no desire to listen to new music but that also doesn’t mean I condemn it. I just prefer to listen to the music I grew up with on stations like Classic Vinyl and Classic Rewind.

other way around here

A good classic rock song every now and again is alright; however I'd hate to have missed out on all the rest. There's so many genre's my only regret is lack of time to sample more. For instance was playing guitar for my 24 YO nephew and he had no clue who Eric Clapton was so we swapped a couple of tunes. And that's as it should be... not bad.

... so now I'm sampling some of KingBob's list. Wish there was more of it around here. . Even from time to time will (at least briefly) see what's up with SEC Clint's latest find.

48 years young here…music isn’t “better” just because it’s older…and TBH, some of the audio quality is so bad that it makes listening to certain “classics” impossible for me…the best sounding rock/metal album, sonically, was recorded analog (Metallica’s Black Album), but for the most part, the digital recording of the last 25 years makes older analog stuff sound pitiful…flame away, IDGAF…

Dude is spot on in his argument. To say good music still isn’t being released is asinine.

To think QOTSA and prime Foo Fighters were my childhood bands, I’m ok with it. Yes it wasn’t Led, Jimi, etc. but why not just appreciate what is being presented??

Adding a few new bands as well The Amazons, Kaleo, The Blue Stones, Rival Sons, and Royal Blood.

I just found The Stews and they are playing the college rock scene and put on a killer show.

Well there are a few of us 50-somethings tech savvy enough to surf the web, scan Sirius XMU/Alt Nation & Spectrum looking for new stuff, and check Apple Music's "New Rock" list.
Does some of it grab me as good? Not much, but a little. The Struts, Walk the Moon, Cold War Kids & others have a few good tunes. Manchester Orchestra too. But how many of these newer bands have enough to say lyrically, and musically, to sustain it over multiple albums?

I've come across some very good albums by newer bands: Decembrists' The King is Dead, Silversun Pickups Swoon, Avett Bros. The Carpenter, OMAM My Head is an Animal. But their follow up albums, for whatever reason, don't measure up, at least to me.

So yes, there are bright spots. I was introduced to MMJ by my younger brother 10 years ago. Love a few of their albums, though they've fallen off lately. White Stripes & Black Keys are mostly great garage rock when they're rocking. Jack White is a good musician who's put out some great stuff.
I've been impressed with Ezra Koenig's songwriting in Vampire Weekend. Tool has come along this century as a rock powerhouse in their own right.

But in general, do these newer bands have it in them to string together great albums aka Led Zeppelin, Rush, Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Metallica? The Beatles, though I'm not a die hard Beatles guy? Or Van Halen & Journey for that matter. Or do they run out of stuff to say after an album or two?

Are we going to stumble across another Jimmy Page, Eddie Van Halen, Neil Peart, Hendrix, Clapton, or David Gilmour in this generation? It doesn't sound like it. We all know music has changed; most kids seem more interested in generating computer or synth-driven sounds as opposed to traditional rock instruments. (Yes, I've listened to GVF).
And when you're leaning on the fact that other artists have coopted Uptown Funk as a sign of great new groundbreaking music...I'm not sure that's the best argument.
