I don’t necessarily hate rap all that much. In fact I like most rap from before 2012.

With Kanye West releasing his new album at some point, I was mildly intrigued as I like some of his stuff. Scrolling through Twitter tonight and saw that 28 different rappers are featured on the album.

And the worst part is, there are already people saying it’s gonna be a great album because of all the different people who have verses in the album. Kanye West is a strange strange dude, and I’d rather hear an album that is authentic and camd from his brain than a different shitty rapper every 30 seconds.

But that’s a huge problem with rap in general. People try to get big names to do 30 second parts to try and get more attention. I thought Kanye might be different but I guess not

Well, to be fair to Kanye, he's been making music for 20+ years at this point. All artists have an expiration date on creativity no matter how talented or genius. Prince might have had one relevant album post 1990. Paul McCartney has had maybe 3 hits post 1980, and all 3 were duets with younger, more relevant artists - Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder. There is a parallel here for Kanye.

I do agree on your point on rap in general, although it's also worth noting that it's kind of part of rap culture. Often times, these guys came from poverty and/or bad situations and got their foot in the door because a more established rapper gave them a verse on their record. They then pass the same opportunity on to help the next generation out. It's a pretty noble thing to do, but it does come at the expense of the music quality sometimes.

The thing about Kanye is that his real talent is in producing and just creative track and concept development, not rapping. So his music ends up better when he has more features and less personal verses

I don’t like the sampled beats. Rap with a talented mc and a live band can be really dope.

We need to repeal that law that mandates rappers shout out their names somewhere in each song.

I hear they get 25 years to life if they fail to do so. Ain't fair to the young lads.

Early during the Rap Era the genre seemed to have creativity, and actual musical value. Cf. LL Cool J, Salt 'N Pepa, En Vogue et al. Since about 2000, however, the majority of rap music is unadulterated trash.

Wholesome PG-rated stuff:

Principal's Office

Less PG-rated stuff:

OPP

Not a fan by any means but there was room on the dance floor for rap in the 80s.

I think rap when utilized correctly is one of the most powerful forms of *musical* communication there is when it comes to explaining other perspectives that people might not understand intuitively.

The problem is 90% of it is mainstream pop culture reiterated and reinforced, which is extremely unappealing from an artistic standpoint. And is what causes what you’re talking about in your OP, people crafting albums specifically for commercial success.

Songs about twerking etc

I’ll be downvoted for this I’m sure but if you even look at a BR native, Kevin Gates, entire catalogue, you’ll actually find a very introspective perspective of what it’s like to come from a particular culture and an evolution over time of a person coming from the that unique perspective.

this can be said for almost all rap. the production (ie. beats) are good, but the lyrical content is pure garbage. A song can sound good even if the listener can't discern one thing the rapper is saying.

Kanye's first 5-6 albums werent enough?

Also, people are saying it's already a great album because he's now streamed it in full twice, and it got great response. He's just tweaking it now based on that listening party, a thing that people used to do pre-COVID

Not at all. As a (former) performing musician and producer myself, Kanye is really on a whole other level.

He's one of the best producers of our generation, which will often get overlooked bc of his antics.

I do get what you are saying though, a lot of rap (not Ye) does have outstanding (not Ye/Dre level) production but lazy, uninspired raps/flows.

Man, I don't know. I'm still an old school fan at heart, but some of the newer stuff like Playboi Carti is just kind of interesting purely for the way he uses his voice as another instrument. It's like weird experimental hypno drug music.

I've also really been liking stuff like Remble, Drakeo the Ruler, lately... maybe I'm just getting acculturated into the current hip hop movement, but I kind of like all this stuff.

Of course, there's still great stuff coming out that is throwback oriented like Griselda, Mach Hommy, etc...

I have a hard time, honestly, listening to today's hip hop and then going back and listening to the classics and saying, "Oh man, the classics are sooo much better." Today's stuff is honestly on a whole different level as far as the variety in beats, flows, and ad libs. A lot of it is kind druggy and weird, but it's also kind of interesting.
