TESLA

One of my favorite bands ever. Why did they never take off? I know the times were a changing from hair to grunge but TESLA was more grunge than hair and their music was far superior.

They were way better in my opinion than all of the grunge from Seattle.

Don’t sell ‘em short...they did make it big. Remember “Love Song”, “Signs”, “Little Suzi”, “Edison’s Medicine”, and my all time favorite - “Modern Day Cowboy”, which rocks its arse off.

Not selling them short at all, just had "Getting Better " go off my play list.

They had so many catchy tunes and some damn good rockers also. I think that they just showed up at the wrong time and radio was trying to turn to grunge.

So many songs that just get you going and everyone who hears one knows all of the lyrics.

I felt like they got the level of respect that they deserved. A solid low tier 2/ high tier 3 hair band. Far below a band like Crue, a little below a band like Dokken, but a step up from a band like Faster Pussycat.

At the time of hair metal, they billed themselves as the "t-sgphirt and blue jeans" band

They still played to the same audience live and on the same radio stations though.

Yeah but they were more stripped down and less austentatious.

I thought they were a solid band. They also started the whole acoustic rock band craze in the '90s.

Tesla is one of the rare hair metal bands that wasn't really hair metal and was actually a great band. They get lumped into the hair metal scene due to their timing, but they should be in a league of their own.

I think GNR was able to shift out of the hair metal labelling due to their level of aggression, whereas Tesla didn't have that to properly set them apart as they deserved to be. As a result they didn't have the lasting effect as GNR did for instance.

TESLA was a pretty good band but I think you answered your own question. When grunge came around it put the hair bands pretty much out of business.

I think one thing the kept them from getting bigger was a person as a focus. No one stood out as far as looks - they were 'just' musicians. I love the music, have four albums, and that first album is full of great stuff.

One, they unfairly got lumped in the hair metal category. Two, as the hard rock/metal scene was starting to experience some backlash, they did themselves little favor by releasing their weakest album (by their standards, anyway).

You are correct, timing is everything.
