System of a Down- Were they legit or not?

I listen to their S/T album for the first time since I was a high school freshman and was reminded why I thought they were awesome, but also why I don't listen to them anymore. Some songs are great, but others are too goofy/annoying and haven't aged well.

They had a very unique sound with the first album. Toxicity was a bit more conventional sounding and I think better overall. The guitarist thinking he could sing really killed Hypnotize/Mesmerize. Haven't listened to them since.

Legit IMO. They still have some really great songs. Like Brosef said, the guitarist got a little too full of himself, though I do like Toxicity. Mesmerize was not good. If he hadn't gone to try his terrible solo career, I would have loved to see what they continued to do.
They put on one hell of a concert, that's for sure. Serj's voice will never get old to me.

Close enough to "all of this" to say ~ "all of this."

Totally legit.
In the midst of the nu metal revolution and the gradual recession of the more extreme subgenres, four Armenians dared to put out some of the heaviest and craziest shite of the '90s.
They are one of the forefathers of alternative metal. The amalgamation of folk, death, groove, and thrash is quite a sight to behold.
Serj is on another planet as a vocalist. He is cut from the same cloth as Mike Patton, although his range isn't quite as expansive. He's eccentric and talented, and he managed to erect a new style of singing that is as unique and recognizable as any in metal. He has soothing melodies and terrifying screams. While black metal shrieks and death metal growls evoke a sense of fear synonymous with horror and terror, Tankian's both erratic and insane squeals and roars produce a true sense of dread. It's like listening to a madman rather than a monster.
The rhythm section is thundering, driving, and groovy all at the same time. You can shake your hips to System of a Down, you can bang your frickin' head, or you can convulse and seizure like someone strung out on a bevy of narcotics.
Their political gestures and stances were a breath of fresh air during their emergence. For some reason, their perspectives seemed much more genuine and sincere than Rage Against the Machine. These guys wanted the world to know about the truly fricked up shite that happened to their people less than a century ago.
Rick Rubin struck gold with this band. I would argue that Toxicity is the last great album he produced.
They are definitely on my bucket list for must-see concerts.

Toxicity - oh damn those high school days. Loved this album.

Toxicity was the only song I liked so I'm gonna say NOT legit. But they had their own sound. They weren't on the same level as the other popular nu metal bands.

I caught them at the varsity in 1998 when they opened for Incubus. I ended up drinking beer with Serj after their set. They definitely kicked arse even though there was only about 30 people there.

Yeah, he's a solid backup vocalist to play against Serj's vocals, but he's by no means a lead vocalist.

That other Armenian band:
The Apex Theory
The singer in Apex Theory was the original drummer in SOAD before injuring his wrist.

That's where they lost me too. I remember when I heard "Sugar" the first time. On a minidisc player while sitting on a school bus during a field trip. It blew my mind.

I agree with Noel Gallagher here:
[On Sum 41 and System of a Down] “Do you ever look at the sky and think, I’m glad I’m alive? Doesn’t it actually make you feel good to be alive to know you have seen the worst two bands in the history of music? Which is quite something when you think about it. Of all the bands that have gone before and all the bands that’ll be in the future, I was around when the worst was around.”
