I recently saw him live a few months ago. He deserves to be on this list but honestly I had a hard time making out the words at his show. He wasn’t drunk or anything just kind of mumbled instead enunciating.

His most well known (and more recent work) is cliché, but Jimmy Buffett's older stuff had a lot of good storytelling in it.

Death of an Unpopular Poet
A Pirate Looks at 40
The Captain and The Kid
Havana Daydreamin'
Desperation Samba

Adam Granduciel from The War on Drugs is highly underrated in this department. Americana mixed with a little psychedelia and a little new wave.

My first thought was Warren Zevon and Jim Croce. But Harry Chaplin has to be my #1.

A lot of Reba’s songs are great stories. She doesn’t write them but she’s great at giving them a voice.
