I just saw John Prine a few weeks ago and man does he still got it. His best stories are in between songs.

I'm a little surprised Jason Isbell hasn't been mentioned.

They do less direct storytelling, but White Buffalo and John Moreland have some good ones.

Ryan Bingham's first and second albums have some solid stuff too. His second album is less consistent, but songs like The Poet, Junky Star and Hallelujah are great.

John Prine and Ray Wyllie Hubbard and David Allen Coe are my favorites. Little Suzies shallow throat always brings a tear to my eye.
