Yet you linked Wikipedia for a source of info on jam bands and Wiki references Les Claypool and Primus under jam bands.

From Primus's wiki:
quote:

Primus's musical style is difficult to define. Primus has been called everything from "thrash-funk meets Don Knotts, Jr." to "the Freak Brothers set to music", and has been variously termed alternative rock, alternative metal, funk metal, and progressive metal. MTV suggests that Primus is "a post-punk Rush spiked with the sensibility and humor of Frank Zappa". Les Claypool himself once described their music as "psychedelic polka."
Crossing genres and improving live on stage. Hmmm...

BTW, last time I saw Les Claypool was at Wakarusa.

well you shouldn't have deleted the link. I've listened to 3 songs now and I am still on the fence about what exact Genre this band should be classified as.

I mean, I've only been listening to Primus since about 1992 and les claypool was a huge influence to me as a bassist.

wow! so this thread really took off.

I just wanted to say, I'm haven't read all of this thread.

labels are stupid when talking about music. I think most artists agree.

Just because a band jams does not make them a jamband. Jamband has become it's own genre almost and not the literal sense of the word "jam" or improvise. Lots of bands improvise and I wouldn't call them jambands. I don't really think of Primus as a jamband. Do you consider Cream a jamband? or a blues band? Same with the Grateful Dead. I don't even think the term jamband was around until after Jerry was dead.

They do. Dave Schools of Widespread Panic said in an interview, "We want to shake free of that name, jam band. The jam band thing used to be The Grateful Dead bands. We shook free of that as hard as we could back in 1989. Then Blues Traveler came on the scene. All together, we created the H.O.R.D.E. tour, which focused a lot of attention on jam bands. Then someone coined the term jam bands. I'd rather just be called retro. When you pigeonhole something, you limit its ability to grow and change."

You missed the point on my earlier posts...I have nothing against the MUSIC just the HIPPIES. I respect all genre of music. I liked some of Phish's music and have seen them live. I just dont dig the scene.

Hippies suck. I had to stop my wife from knocking one out the other night because that smelly, shoeless, dancing hippie kept stepping on her feet.

how about Dinosaur Jr? or Richard Thompson?

I wouldn't describe either as a jamband, but they both certainly jam. They don't take it out in space ala Phish or the Grateful Dead. But they do jam.

Not really wanting to extend this argument any farther. Enough has been said.

Did I read some of y'all are going to be in OKC for Phish? I'm calling it the sleeper of the tour. See ya there.

Why has no one brought up DMB, epitome of jam band. Sure they're studio stuff isn't "jam band" but when you hold jams/grooves for 20 minutes live you're a jam band regardless of what genre you intended to make.
