Nominate some lyricists, post some examples, and we can discuss the talents that they hold.

I'll let you take the liberty of deciding who is modern.

Wesley Willis Cut the Mullet

Do something about your long, filthy hair
It looks like a rat's nest
Do something about your mullet
Get out the hair clippers, jerk

Cut the mullet
Cut the mullet
Cut the mullet
Cut the mullet

Get the rat's nest off your head
Get that crazy-arse mother off your skull
Take your arse to the barber shop
Tell the barber that you're sick of looking like an a-hole

Cut the mullet
Cut the mullet
Cut the mullet
Cut the mullet

The mullet is the reason why people hate you
They are sick of looking at your nappy weed-sack
Nobody wants to look at you with that mullet on your head
Why don't you cut that mullet, you numbskull

Cut the mullet
Cut the mullet
Cut the mullet
Cut the mullet

Yoni Wolf of Why?

White English LINK
Tongue gone dumb
from disuse at some
numb young sea-scum’s post
Bottle after bottle after bottle out sink
cold filled to the cork with uncrackable code
so good through the years the knots went
that its alphabet was even forgotten
Me? I’m head vessel for a fleet of tears
out on my old man’s bones parole
Under sail only for a hole to hell to fill
with handfuls and handfuls of loose-earned dust
or plug up level really with anything other than us
and then to toss a dusty rug over--

Lost (lost lost) in translation. Lost.

To a kingdom of light I wish tonight to fall witness
but victim to a spite it might incite sickness
I sit in and pretend and through it write hymns:
Tight-limbed in white English as my one and trite business.
Light as a nice fat rice sack boiled in water
out farther than the house of my father
waiting in the sitting room of yet another doctor
I taste what little bitter roots this winter has to offer and
without a son or daughter to shoulder the debt
alone with the past and prone to regret
dreamt my death by a knife on a path in Burnet
but under the bedspread, I’m younger than dead yet.

Lost (lost lost) in translation. Lost.

Even an opal heart hopes all night
in the bright, biting strobe lights
and bitter cold, as the living set up
to a long white joke told through sun up
‘til the bones and bodies spun around them fold.
Hopes all night through the old lone fight
and the bright vast cold, but there’s no punch-line
by this told whack joke for all one’s life is surrounded
‘til the black hole and bodies spun around it fold.

Lost (lost lost) in translation. Lost.
Lost (lost lost) in translation. Lost.

LINK ]"Days And Days" Recent Live Version HERE
The dirty leaves are sailing
On a hot wind ocean
And the summer comes
And the summer goes and always has & will
And something somewhere
That you said
goes ricochet
All through my head
And flashing like a neon sign
The time stand still
Chorus:
Hours are forever,
running all together
At the crossroads of a minute
And you and me were in it.
I never saw it coming
but I saw it fade away
Today, today, today....
Days and Days
And still the whining of the wheels
Sounds closest to the way I feel.
Winter comes and winter goes.
And always has & will
Another hour, another day, another year
You pissed away
Remember walking in the Rain?
I'm walking there still.
(Chorus)
Like every heart that's beat before
And every wave to kiss a shore
I'm not the first, I'm not the last...
That's soon to be your past
But every morning
when the light
Comes creeping in
around my eyes
Another future falls behind
The one I had in mind!

(chorus)

A little more simple but still powerful:
LINK ]"Carry Me Away"
Today I went & bought myself a bottle,
like we used to do,
reminded me of you.

Today I saw a train roll by the river,
blowing off the steam,
reminded me of me.

That's when I threw the bottle in the river.
That's when I started running for the train.

There's nothing that you need I can't deliver,
carry me away, carry me away.

Make it seven o nine California time,
whoever said it was a small world was either a liar or a fool,
cause it's not true.

And any promise we make is as easy to break
as the plastic people on a wedding cake so says you
but you know, I do.

I hear you thinking,
from far away.
If ya keep lying & crying & trying & drinking,
I'm gonna carry me away, carry me away.

If you think about me,
from far away,
I hope you find it with me or without me.
Carry me away, carry me away,
carry me away, carry me away,
carry me away, carry me away.

Witch Hunt

The night is black
Without a moon
The air is thick and still
The vigilantes gather on
The lonely torch lit hill

Features distorted in the flickering light
The faces are twisted and grotesque
Silent and stern in the sweltering night
The mob moves like demons possessed
Quiet in conscience, calm in their right
Confident their ways are best

The righteous rise
With burning eyes
Of hatred and ill-will
Madmen fed on fear and lies
To beat and burn and kill

They say there are strangers who threaten us
In our immigrants and infidels
They say there is strangeness too dangerous
In our theaters and bookstore shelves
That those who know what's best for us
Must rise and save us from ourselves

Quick to judge
Quick to anger
Slow to understand
Ignorance and prejudice
And fear walk hand in hand...

Connor Oberst of "Bright Eyes," Alex Brown Church of "Sea Wolf," and Colin Meloy of "the Decemberists" would be on any list I can think of.

Jay Farrar was incredible at his peak.

Ryan Adams, although he could use a filter due to the sheer volume of output, is one of my favorites..

Patty Griffin and Gillian Welch... Damien Jurado... I'll just stop now.

This one

I probably could have made the title resemble it more.

Some great stuff in here.

Days and Days is great:

"Hours are forever,
running all together
At the crossroads of a minute
And you and me were in it.
I never saw it coming
but I saw it fade away
Today, today, today....
Days and Days
And still the whining of the wheels
Sounds closest to the way I feel.
Winter comes and winter goes.
And always has & will
Another hour, another day, another year
You pissed away
Remember walking in the Rain?
I'm walking there still."

That's a great piece of lyrics. Reminds me a bit of Morrissey's songwriting.

Alex Turner is one of my favorites:
A Certain Romance
And a live version from 05

Well oh they might wear classic Reeboks
Or knackered Converse
Or tracky bottoms tucked in socks
But all of that's what the point is not
The point's that there ain't no romance around there

And there's the truth that they can't see
They'd probably like to throw a punch at me
And if you could only see them, then you would agree
Agree that there ain't no romance around there

You know, oh it's a funny thing you know
We'll tell 'em if you like
We'll tell 'em all tonight
They'll never listen
'Cause their minds are made up
And 'course it's all okay to carry on that way

And over there, there's broken bones
There's only music, so that there's new ringtones
And it don't take no Sherlock Holmes
To see it's a little different around here

Don't get me wrong, oh there's boys in bands
And kids who like to scrap with pool cues in their hands
And just 'cause he's had a couple o' cans
He thinks it's all right to act like a d**khead

Don't you know, oh it's a funny thing you know
We'll tell em if you like
We'll tell em all tonight
They'll never listen
'Cause their minds are made up
And 'course it's all okay to carry on that way

I said no
Oh no
Oh you won't get me to go
Anywhere, said anywhere
I won't go
Oh no no

Well over there, there's friends of mine
What can I say? I've known 'em for a long long time
And yeah they might overstep the line
But I just cannot get angry in the same way
Not in the same way
Not in the same way
Oh no, oh no no
