Spinoff: bands and artists you dont understand why they get so much hate

Two come to mind which were criticized based on comparisons to other work.
Audioslave had a terrible critical reception, particularly around Cornell’s lyrics. “Be Yourself” in particular got panned and it’s got one of the prettiest guitar riffs I’ve heard. It’s also just a positive song, which is refreshing to hear sometimes. It just seems odd sometimes when people are in a different stage in their life lyrically, and critics will blast them because it’s not the same depth because the same pain and substance isn’t there.
Bush is seen as a 90s grunge knockoff. They’re from England. These guys aren’t going to be dealing with the same scene. Kind of weird so many hold a British band to the American grunge standard because of the time period they came out in.

Not a band, but Metallica's self titled album is every bit as good as their first four and is the gold standard for hard rock albums. People get pissed because it isn't a carbon copy of Master of Puppets or And Justice For All.

for every artist (and album, in metallica's case) listed in this thread, i feel like everyone should TOTALLY understand why they get so much hate. thread title should be updated to just "list stuff that ppl hate".

The Eagles. I’ll never understand the hate.

Mumford
DMB
Neither are that oversaturated anymore and both have have legit musicians. Moreover, they're all fairly laid back and aren't exactly getting themselves in the news constantly for antics.

I agree with those two although I think Mumford has gone way downhill since their first album.

They get hate because they're a paint-by-numbers Pearl Jam derivative. That said, the hate for them is a bit excessive.

Hall & Oates
I recently read that Jann Weiner had a personal issue with Daryl Hall over Darryl Hall getting pizzed off and speaking up about Rolling Stone magazine outing Elton John in the late 70s as a gay man, when E.J. wasn't ready to go public with it. Weiner then ran some nasty hit pieces on H & O and started to spread a lot of false rumors about the due himself.
Regardless if you give early Hall & Oates a listen, you'll realize they were immensely talented.
