The Night They drove old Dixie down-The Band
it just speaks to something deep inside e. i can't say what
The Band Played Waltzing Matilda-Eric Bogle
strikes a chord with me. so mournful, and so true.

let's make this a thread for the ages. what songs grab you deep inside and don't let go?

Cat Stevens - Father & Son

My dad used to sing this to me as a baby. He is my best friend, and for some reason, this song makes me realize he won't always be here.

Also, the entire Electro-Shock Blues record from The Eels...

Electro-Shock Blues was written largely in response to frontman Mark Oliver Everett's (more commonly known as E) sister's suicide and his mother's terminal lung cancer. Many of the songs deal with their decline, his response to loss, and coming to terms with suddenly becoming the only living member of his family (his father having died of a heart attack in 1982; Everett, then 19 years old, was the first to discover his body).

Hand Me Down - Matchbox 20

Reminds me of how close I came to death and how happy I am to be alive today. It was the song playing in my car at the time of my test of life

This Woman's Work - Kate Bush. This one because of "She's Having a Baby" and what the wife and I went through to have our one and only child.

When You Say Nothing At All - I prefer the Alison Krauss version because the song makes more sense coming from a woman. She nails it. I cry.

The Walk -Sawyer Brown- The father/son deal kills me. I am drop-off parent for my little boy.

Country Bumpkin - Cal Smith - The love and loss involved.

Tanya Tucker has two for me. Wish I'd had Known The man a Little Better and What's Your Daddy's Name. The father/daughter deal in those. One where a little girl loses a loving father too soon, and another where a ne'er-d-well does all he can to find the daughter he never knew he had.

Pearl Jam - Black

Not a huge PJ fan, but Ten came out about the time I was going through a tough breakup. There's a verse at the end of the song that gets me every time. It really sucked when the song started getting radio play.

Mike and the Mechanics - The Living Years - no explanation needed

Conway Twitty - That's My Job - if you're a father or mother (or heck even an adoring uncle/aunt)) with young children this tugs at you.

Eric Clapton - Tears in Heaven - no explanation needed

Bruce Springstein - Streets of Philadelphia - this is a new one for me. This song didn't hit home until recent years when I met a really cool, sweet, and beautiful girl who I (and others) wouldn't hesitate to date/marry under normal circumstances. Unfortunately, she had contracted HIV. It made the whole HIV/Aids thing personal to me to actual meet someone and see the heartache and regret and hear it in someone's voice. I just felt really sorry for her and the song makes me think of her when I hear it.
