Seemingly every shitty Nashville bro country song does this these days, referencing Ol' Hank, Skynnard, Alabama, Johnny Cash, ect. I see this as a desperate ploy by these artists to say "No, really! We're country! I promise!!! See, look, we know who xyz old country star is!!!" It's almost as dumb as them still acting like brand new Chevys with the lift kit still have bench seats like it's 1975.

quote:

Probably the world record: Charlie Daniels - South's Gonna Do It Again
At work and can't search for a link, but Clint Black's Tuckered Out" would give Charlie a run for his money, as would American Pie, if we count the artists being alluded to, just not named.

Others I can think of off the top of my head:
Hank Williams You Wrote My Life - Moe Bandy
The Ride - DAC
The Night Hank Williams Came to Town - Johnny Cash
Rollin' and Ramblin' - Emmylou Harris
Good Ole Boys Like Me - Don Williams
Put Some Drive in Your Country - Travis Tritt
Hats Off - Alabama
Grand Ole Opry Song - Jimmy Martin
Nightshift - The Commodores
R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A. - John Mellencamp

Pavement had several....
Range Life

quote:

Out on tour with the Smashing Pumpkins
Nature kids, I/they don't have no function
I don't understand what they mean And
I could really give a frick
The Stone Temple Pilots,
They're elegant bachelors
They're foxy to me
Are they foxy to you?
I will agree
There isn't absolutely nothing
Nothing more than me

Unseen Power of the Picket Fence

This whole song is an homage to REM.

quote:

There's some bands I'd like to name check And one of them is REM
Classic songs with a long history
Southern boys just like you and me R.E.M!

Flashback to 1983
'Chronic Town' was their first EP
Later on came 'Reckoning'
'Finster's Art', and titles to match
